Now, while I do believe in it, I do think it's an extremely rare occurrence. And as you stated, nearly all of it is fake.

Genuine speaking in tongues isn't the gibberish or the babble that you hear from the likes of Benny Hinn & Co. Like TwoCult said, it is an actual speaking of another known language without knowing that language.

And it never actually happens.

Skepticism is not a position; it is an approach to claims.

RE: Speaking in tongues: A confession
I went to a church that did this when I was a teen. It scared the crap out of me! Confused

No brand of religion in my family ever did this so it was really strange to see it happen for the first time. Although having said that we/I did do some pretty strange stuff as Mormons. I went along with a lot of it because everyone else around me was going along with it as well. For a shameful amount of time I claimed to be a true believer even as I had doubts. Easy to ignore the hole in the boat as long as it seemed to be pointed in the right direction.

Once you buy into all that stuff so deeply it's quite difficult to jump overboard so, I commend you for finally getting out of it. Look forward to reading more Thumbsup

RE: Speaking in tongues: A confession
When I was young, a believer, and a church regular, I still couldn't buy into speaking in tongues. The only time I ever saw it done was during Sunday service. It was always the same woman at the same time within the service, followed by the pastor "translating." The whole time, the rest of the congregation would mutter "praise Jesus" and "amen." I swear that I was the only one you could see just how contrived it was.

Thank God I came to my senses.

Hah. See what I did there? Big Grin

RE: Speaking in tongues: A confession
Though I've never done anything of speaking in tongues, I've felt the same feeling when giving readings to people. It's liberating to know it's just the imagination taking over. It's creepy for a little bit knowing the truth, but as time passes it goes off into the "uncomfortably silly" category then finally fully understanding that it's a part of deconversion and that you're not to blame, but lucky to have overcome the delusion.

RE: Speaking in tongues: A confession
Was raised Catholic and so speaking in tongues and faith healing was wacky, crazy, baptist shit that you saw on TV while flipping channels, and not to be taken seriously...Catholicism is way more reverent, droll, cold, boring, droning...It's all reverb, stained glass and vaulted ceilings chock full of sit, stand, sit, stand, kneel, stand, kneel.

A couple people blathering on to each other in an incomprehensible made-up language? With a third dude translating for 'em?

That's a fucking improv sketch. I did that in improv class. We knew it was nonsense.

Thank Christ for a secular upbringing, s'all I can say...

... this is my signature!
