Sperm are People, Too
It is often said that the bible is against abortion. I've often heard Christians argue that the bible makes it implicit that abortion is murder because if two men are fighting and one hits a pregnant woman in the stomach, then he is to lose body parts in trade for the injury to the baby.

In this vein, I'm going to put forth an argument that makes it perfectly clear that life starts at sperm. In Deuteronomy 25:11-12 , we're told that a woman who rescues her husband from a fight by grabbing his private parts must lose her hand. This is obviously because she may have done injury to the little "potential human lives" floating around in his scrotum, and the punishment for this is an eye for an eye, a hand for a... tail, I guess.

My girlfriend is mad at me. Perhaps I shouldn't have tried cooking a stick in her non-stick pan.

RE: Sperm are People, Too
For at least a few years I have thought about the bible in the sperm aspect--and what I found funny in a sense is it is called "seed". Given that I take the ancient people knew what seed was, I kind of took it that perhaps the ancient people believed that man's "seed" was the full human (just really, really tiny), and the woman was just the incubator like the soil is for seed.

Of course, they probably also thought that the "seed" was "one seed" and not millions. They probably didn't think of the woman as contributing to the child in any "real" way... but I can't say for certain.

Although as I recall at least some people believing that masturbation is a sin as well... I took it as a possibility that the lack of knowledge by the ancient people went to show who really wrote the bible and the "morals" therein. If masturbation is a sin, it would make complete sense if they thought the man was "completely" responsible for the baby making material (it'd be the same as spewing out a dead baby every time).

By this logic when the women takes the sperm... in, the millions of sperm that try to fertilize and fail are all little babies and each time a man ejaculates into a woman it is like a tiny genocide.

Under Repair.

That argument is not any sillier than any other Bible-based moral argument.

Well when has God been against Genocides?

I love your insights about what ancient people thought about sperm. I didn't even give this a second thought. It may be true or not (you didn't cite a source), but it sounds accurate and out of sheer laziness I'm just going to believe it.

Some people do believe that masturbation is a sin, although it's one of those implied sins (because the bible has literally nothing to say about it). There is a story in the bible about a man named Onan whose brother died and so he was forced by his dad to marry his brother's wife Tamar. So he did, but instead of making children with Tamar he "spilled the seed" and God killed him for it. Some people believe that "spilling the seed" is a metaphor for masturbation... which I guess makes it a sin that carries the death penalty? But in context, it sounds a lot more like the Catholic interpretation (which says that this was birth control), because Onan "spilled his seed" before finishing sex, and who finishes sex with masturbation? It's clearly withdrawal.

Ask a Christian about masturbation, and you'll find that the subject doesn't go very far. They all get a sense that it must be sinful because nobody talks about it and sex is found sinful for so many reasons in the bible. It's like porn --- there's no direct bible command that says "don't show off your nude body" but because it feels so wrong to Christians they simply declare it wrong, and maybe they'll find a bible story to infer it from, too.

My girlfriend is mad at me. Perhaps I shouldn't have tried cooking a stick in her non-stick pan.

There is no person who has the genetic make up of a sperm. just sayin.
More like 1/2 a person, minus the mitochondria.

Your beliefs do not make you a better person, your behavior does.

In the O.T. Yahweh had no qualms over his gang committing genocide against the men women and children of other tribes so I don't think a sperm or two would have put him out too much! Weeping
