Stroke
March has not been a good month for me so far. My grandma suffered a stroke two days ago, and I am in the hospital watching her right now. Can't utter a single word that's conprehensible. This is not a life, in my opinion, worth living.

We are making plans, plans I hope no one will have to make for me.

Hug I'm so, so sorry.

There are multiple areas of the brain responsible for speech recognition and expression. She may be able to comprehend what you are saying but not express what she is thinking (if you are interested, Wernicke's vs Broca's). I don't know how much was affected or where, obviously, but if it's mostly just her speech and not catastrophic, then they'll get specialists involved to work with her on using things like picture boards to communicate. Does she know any basic sign language? A lot of people that don't know any sign language still know this one:

I was wondering why you'd been quiet recently.

Good for you for being there.

RE: Stroke
Well, as far as I know, she can barely move, barely talk, and their is some bleeding in her brain.

My mom opted for a "DNR" just in case. Which, in my opinion, is the kindest option. If she does live through this, she will be placed in hospice care which my uncles insurance does not pay for.

Sorry to hear about your grandma, A2. There is no easy way to face these things, so good luck with everything to you, your grandma and your family. Take care.

RE: Stroke
Family consensus around here, as hashed out in a few painfully emotional sessions, is pull the damn plug.

It is a very difficult question when it comes to those who haven't made their wishes known beforehand. I suppose it's a matter of weighing what one thinks they might have thought against their capacity to enjoy life in their present state. But there are no actual answers, and you least of all would be in the position to take them in this case even if there were.

So, uh... Hug
