T.V. commercials (US)
I've noticed lately there have been several movie stars doing commercial ads on TV.
What gives? Anyone else notice this? Consider

Nothing new - it's been going on since TV was new.

RE: T.V. commercials (US)
Being an actor isn't a very secure job. Sure, when you get paid, you get paid a shit-ton, but you can never be sure when - or if - you'll get another part. And even if you decide to start your own project, you can never be sure if it'll get off the ground, and if it does get off the ground, you can never be sure if a studio will pick it up and make you money by selling it. Granted, many actors do it simply for the love of acting, but they've also gotta put food on the table.

So, when they're in between parts and they get an opportunity, they give themselves a little financial boost by doing a commercial. It's not a Hollywood blockbuster that will buy them 3 cars and an HD television in the shower, but it's a few more drops in the bucket.

Plus, the media realizes that we recognize these people. Maybe even like them. Thus, the average american sits in his Lazy-Boy with his KFC drumstick in one hand and his Budweiser in the other, sees Rob Lowe on TV and says "I loved Rob Lowe in those movies! Let's hear what he has to say about Direct TV..." It's a method I really want to believe doesn't work, but it's a sad truth that when you put Paris Hilton on the hood of a car eating a cheeseburger, burger sales skyrocket.

Idolatry. I'm sure I read something about that in a book once.

Give me your argument in the form of a published paper, and then we can start to talk.

Sometimes you want to have an early warning system to warn people of the movements of a deranged psychopath with an army. Silly Hollywood types.

Because sometimes you have to go backwards to move forward...

Really not much different than all the movie actors changing gears and taking a major role in a TV series. It feeds the ego, the need to be seen.

Hiring a celebrity is obviously more expensive than bottom-run starting actors. Therefore if a company is doing so, they expect concomitantly larger returns (whether directly through sales or more indirectly through branding and image).

No mystery at all.
