If they have a special alloy that they used, and you simply recast it - they might be able to trace it back by spectrographic analysis......

Adding a bit of alloy would likely screw it up enough to make it tough to trace it..

Why didn't he just sell the bars? Melt that shit down, reforge it and noone will know where they came from. No evidence to convict him of any crime and there's not likely to be $2million dollars worth of gold stolen in his area recently.

You’ve done this before haven’t you? Consider

“Ocean: A body of water occupying about two-thirds of a world made for man - who has no gills.”~ Ambrose Bierce

It would only take a little copper or silver, not inexpensive of themselves, to change the constituency of that gold to something that may not be traceable. It is possible that the particular level of purity is known, and what the trace elements are. I for one would not want that gold around me. The people who hid it in that tank probably aren't nice people, Rolleyes and they know that they hid it. Smart choice, giving it to the police, so that the people who hid it, or their henchmen don't come to visit.

Having that kind of wealth presents its own sort of risks. You start needing to have security people (can you trust them, too?) and so forth. Being rich in a flamboyant public way is asking for it. Nouveau riche drives Cadillacs, and vieux riche drives nice cars without a lot of flash.
