Cheers, Filox.
Chrome's Task Manager shows me exactly the same as Activity Monitor: I can see what processes are active. I can not see which of those processes is/are causing the temp surge.
I'm beginning to think it isn't one single process that's causing the problem, but a combination of 2 or more that don't jive with each other.

The good news, however, is that while checking this I of course had to run Chrome just now. And whaddayaknow... I don't get that temp surge anymore! With exactly the same tabs and processes open and running as yesterday and the day before...! This leads me to believe that the problem wasn't caused by something in my Chrome application but by something coming from outside of Chrome. Something that literally threw a spanner in the works. This while I have Sophos Anti-virus running. So it probably wasn't malware. I'm guessing it was simply a bit of crappy code causing it.

Anyway: the prob has inexplicably 'solved itself'... Maybe rebooting had something to do with it although that didn't change anything earlier.
So thanks for trying to think this through with me guys. Appreciate it. The prob was solved even if none of us have a clue how, or what caused it in the first place. Big Grin

OK, may I ask a stupid question? Have you cleaned your cache? Temp memory and Internet temp files? No matter that you use MacOS, I am sure they have cache and temp memory as well and it needs to be purged from time to time. My guess is that something was left over and it was making your browser go into some kind of loop, but cookies often have a time limit, so after the time expired, they were either deleted or updated, so now the problem has stopped.

Can CCleaner be used on Mac (does it have a Mac version)? If not, do you know any similar program? Find it and use it, clean your crap.

P.S.

Having Sophos Antivirus does not mean you are protected, it means you are partially protected, but as with any other antivirus, something can still go through. It is highly questionable if the antivirus even stops adware or spyware, that is why we have special programs that are specialised for that kind of problems, like Ad-aware or Spybot - Search and Destroy. As much as MacOS and Chrome are much more secure that Win and IE, you can still get all sorts of problems.

Peace.

RE: Technology by Filox
Ok I would need some advice, preferably from Filox as he is great.

So 5 days ago my mail account got accessed by an unknown person accross the globe.
And yesterday my LoL account got accessed as well.
I secured both >> LoL got a better pw and my mail address two more verification steps (apart from password).
I do have the IP, state, city, and exact time when it happend on the mail account.
Just wrote to customer service of LoL to check if it was the same IP/city/state there to check if it is a coincidence or a pattern, I guess I will see if other stuff got accessed as well. (I don't say hacking because guessing passwords is not hacking imho)
So the advice I need is, how do I go from here. Having IP and city. If there is a pattern that it happens more often from now, do you think it makes sense to file charges? And if yes, where? I am not in the US, the IP is in the US. And what exactly would I say? Does it only make sense if important data gets accessed? But "hacking" in itself is illegal already, so it shouldn't matter, right?
Thanks in advance

Scarlet, never heard of this, but why wouldn't you try Comodo Internet Security? At the moment it can find and remove viruses like Antivirus 2013 that even Kaspersky can not remove or find. NOD32, AVG Free, Avira even the best ever Malwarebytes failed to find and remove some of the newest viruses, yet Comodo did it without problems. At this moment it is the best protection you can have.

That is just the beginning. Comodo alos has Sandbox, Clouding, GeekBudy, their own web browser, you can transfer all your Internet traffic through their servers for extra protection... Everything I have seen tells me they are way in front of everybody else.

Also, if you can prove to them that your computer was infected and something happened, while you had Comodo I.S. installed, you get 500$. That is how much they are sure of their quality.

There is a Mac version, I'd use this over anything else.

Leela...

Not much you can do there. What you can do is, download and scan Comodo antivirus, stop using Microsoft Outlook and use Mozilla Thunderbird, if you use email client.

Then you can contact your ISP (Internet Service Provider) and tell them what happened, maybe they can block that hacking IP, or they can contact his/hers ISP, so they can ban his account for some time. Every ISP has an ABUSE service that can block your IP and shut down your internetz for a week as a warning, but if you continue to ... I don't know, spread viruses, attack people, spam and spam where spam is forbidden (newsgroups), you can get banned for a month or they can cancel your prescription completely, so you would need another ISP.

Does it work like that in the USA, I have no idea, but call your ISP and check it out. To file a law suit, it makes no sense, who knows who attacked you, did he use a public IP, did he just hack someone's wifi... That can never be proved in court and you will loose time and money, not worth it.

Change your passwords, use minimum of 6 letters and 2 numbers, combination of caps and no-caps(aFtHWwEr), numbers and signs(!"#$%&/=?) is the best. If you haven't change the passwords already, change them now, right now. And not only the ones you saw were used and abused, change all your passwords, this looks like someone has hacked your computer and took your passwords. Look out if you used e-bay and Internet shopping. Call bank and tell them to stop any transaction that isn't confirmed by phone, or something like that.

Now, go get Comodo and scan yourself.

Thanks for acknowledging my greatness.

Thumbsup

Unfortunately that "Mac version" is not recognized by my Mac...

No, seriously, what was the link you used?

http://www.filehippo.com is what I use for everything. But I don't have Mac, so... Try the official page if filehippo does not work for you.

You want to check out the Comodo SecureDNS . If it does not work on Mac, sorry.
