The Box
This is a story presented on an Occult program my dad watched and related to me. I feel it has fallacies but I'll post it anyway because I did find it mildly interesting :

"There is a box. An exact copy is given to both east and west. The box gives out a certain flower at every time of day.
Those in the west break it apart and study it and find nothing , and the box stops giving flowers when put back together.
The east creates a timetable so that anyone can come to the box and get the flower they like at different times of day."

Now I get a very uncomfortable vibe from this little tale - it's almost like it's telling you not to question things and accept them as they are. But it's like saying if you believe in Santa you get these gifts but if you don't he stops giving you gifts - well yeah , I can't agree with that but it's completely out of context.

Your thoughts ?

RE: The Box
As soon as I opened my box, flowers started growing everywhere. indeed, not anymore in the box. It took some time for them to grow and for me to notice them, but now... they even attract butterflies. As for the box itself... Is it the box that makes the flowers grow? or the seeds inside...

You know what Gaglamesh...
It's this kind of metaphors that religions use to convey their message of guilt an sin. The premise is dubious at best. And the concept taps directly into your subconscious. I have a strange kind of Stockholm syndrome about such metaphors.

Edit:
How about this...
There is a box that spreads a disease.
The west opens the box and it stops spreading the disease. The east plans a schedule so that no one is in it's neighbourhood when it opens. Smile
Or this...
What do you base that assumption on that the box will not give you flowers anymore once opened?

RE: The Box
The west opens the box, dissects the flower and finds the cure for cancer.
The east opens the box, lets the dying pray to it, and then escorts them to the morgue.

I got that same vibe when I first heard the story.
It just didn't make sense. The premise is flawed and it puts and emphasis on blindly following suit with whatever the status quo might be.
Now I do respect the eastern philosophy to look inward first and outward second , but this just goes a bit overboard.

But hey, at least they've got a box to give them flowers for all those funerals!

So many cats, so few good recipes.

RE: The Box
I thought this thread was going to be about the Matheson short story. Which is excellent by the way and is nothing like the movie. And to the question I thought you were going to ask... I would push the button, wouldn't be able to help myself.
To the question you actually asked. I only enjoy stories like the one in which you told in the same way I enjoy red riding hood and three pigs. Fables that attempt to give me a lesson but fail, only to be remembered as a poorly written tale meant o sway the votes of children. Entertaining like Die Hard only not nearly as bad ass.Cool
