The "New" Pledge of Allegiance/School Prayer
Got a friend request from someone today whose name I didn't recognize. I decided to look at his page to figure out if I knew him and this was the first thing I came across:

Quote:BY A 15 Year. OLD SCHOOL KID who got an A+ for this entry (TOTALLY AWESOME)!

Since the Pledge of Allegiance And The Lord's Prayer Are not allowed in most
Public schools anymore Because the word 'God' is mentioned..... A kid in Arizona.... wrote the attached NEW School prayer:

"New Pledge of Allegiance"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now I sit me down in school Where praying is against the rule
For this great nation under God
Finds mention of Him very odd.
If scripture now the class recites,
It violates the Bill of Rights.
And anytime my head I bow
Becomes a Federal matter now.
Our hair can be purple, orange or green,
That's no offense; it's a freedom scene..
The law is specific, the law is precise.
Prayers spoken aloud are a serious vice.
For praying in a public hall
Might offend someone with no faith at all..
In silence alone we must meditate,
God's name is prohibited by the state.
We're allowed to cuss and dress like freaks,
And pierce our noses, tongues and cheeks...
They've outlawed guns, but FIRST the Bible.
To quote the Good Book makes me liable.
We can elect a pregnant Senior Queen,
And the 'unwed daddy,' our Senior King.
It's 'inappropriate' to teach right from wrong,
We're taught that such 'judgments' do not belong..
We can get our condoms and birth controls,
Study witchcraft, vampires and totem poles .
But the Ten Commandments are not allowed,
No word of God must reach this crowd.
It's scary here I must confess,
When chaos reigns the school's a mess.
So, Lord, this silent plea I make:
Should I be shot; My soul please take!
Amen
If you aren't ashamed to do this,
Please pass this on..
Jesus said, 'If you are ashamed of me,
I will be ashamed of you before my Father. ’
Not ashamed? Pass this on.
First of all, I have never heard of the Pledge of Allegiance being banned because it mentions God. Second, I'm so tired of theists clamoring for tolerance of their beliefs, but when anyone so much as suggests tolerance of others beliefs or lack-thereof (not just atheism but Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, etc.) everyone flips out saying it's a violation of their rights.
I could go on about this "new" Pledge of Allegiance, but this post would wind up being way too long.
RE: The "New" Pledge of Allegiance/School Prayer
I feel so guilty that we, as atheists, have banned school prayer and any mention of the christian God in our public schools. We all remember that kid in Texas who got expelled from school simply for bowing his head!
I have one kid left in public school. They still say the "Prayer of Allegiance" every chance they get.
I hate these stupid ass cutesy Facebook meme poems.
End public schools, end the debate about god in public schools. Wanna pray? Start your own friggin school. My kids want nothing to do with crossing their hearts and hoping to die, sticking a needle in their eye for sky-daddy.
RE: The "New" Pledge of Allegiance/School Prayer
I seriously doubt a 15 yr old wrote that "revised prayer"... I love (aka - find it highly annoying) how the theists provide little anecdotes which use a claim that a child has some sort of clarity into their proposed social reality...
On the other hand... there is another good point I've heard in that respect. It was in reply to a claim made about a 12 yr old who "preached the word of god" with such conviction, strength, clarity, and "understanding"... the point of the reply was that if a 12yr old can fully understand the concept, it's probably not that complicated (or correct) to begin with.
At a signal from the Principal the pupils, in ordered ranks, hands to the side, face the Flag. Another signal is given; every pupil gives the flag the military salute -- right hand lifted, palm downward, to a line with the forehead and close to it. Standing thus, all repeat together, slowly, “I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands; one Nation indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all.” ... At the words, “to my Flag,” the right hand is extended gracefully, palm upward, toward the Flag, and remains in this gesture till the end of the affirmation; whereupon all hands immediately drop to the side.
— From The Youth’s Companion, 65 (1892)
The Bellamy salute is the salute described by Francis Bellamy to accompany the American Pledge of Allegiance, which he had authored. The Bellamy salute was first demonstrated on October 12, 1892 according to Bellamy's published instructions for the "National School Celebration of Columbus Day".
There was initially some resistance to dropping the Bellamy salute, for example from the Daughters of the American Revolution, but this opposition died down quickly following Nazi Germany's declaration of war against the United States on December 11, 1941.
One might note: no mention of god in that original pledge. Drinking Beverage
I think in the end, I just feel like I'm a secular person who has a skeptical eye toward any extraordinary claim, carefully examining any extraordinary evidence before jumping to conclusions. ~ Eric ~ My friend ... who figured it out.
Sounds like it was written by the mom from Detroit Rock City.
Huge difference between prayer and officially sanctioned prayer.
