The Pope vs. Jesus
Good article here on the Vatican's battle with the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru. This is a prominent university in south america and the alma mater of Peru's current president. The Pope wants to stop the University from using the word "Catholic" because they have purportedly strayed from roman catholic orthodoxy.

The issue is that the University teaches liberation theology, a movement that mixes leftist politics with religion and views the Christian faith from the perspective of poor people. It encourages followers to tackle social problems in terms that opponents equate with Marxism.

Any time I've read about liberation theology it has struck me as the most consistent with the reported teachings of Jesus. Read more about it at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberation_theology

RE: The Pope vs. Jesus
You can be damn sure, that if something bad came to light here, (such as some sort of fraud or sex abuse), the Vatican would be saying "oh, it's not connected to us, directly". They control, when they want, and assert the opposite, when it's convenient. The fact is , they DO control. They better watch it, this stuff will bite them on the butt someday.
