The Population Bomb
(In my humble opinion)
The major reason there are 8,000,000,000+ Homo sapiens on this planet is our fossil fuel legacy. Like all legacies, this one is finite. Someone made a comment on another forum: major cities have a 3 day food supply, this is the buffer against devolving into savagery. In theory, people could discuss this and think about a rational plan. Instead they magically think that nuclear power or bio-fuels or whatever will solve everything.
We evolved in a very dangerous world when don't think too much, get on with reproduction was the only viable mode. Currently, we have had uncharacteristically easy lives reaping the stored energy of countless dead creatures. I was shocked to learn that the average life-expectancy in the USA in 1900 was 40 years. "The life of man, solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short." Thomas Hobbs (1588 - 1679) Can there be any other future?

RE: The Population Bomb
well yes of course, we're not as dependant on fossil fuel as we think we are. We do have viable alternatives, the only problem is that out current economic system won't allow a quick implementation of those alternatives.
But if we reach a critic point, then the demand will be high enough and the cost won't be a problem, and eventually things will get back to normal...

The world is more dangerous than we usually realize, but we're not as frail as we usually think either
