RE: The US is #1!
I'll chime in on the US military spending spat since the debate has been so mild, and it really needed a good shaking up Smile

I agree the US military spending levels are a huge drain on our economy. It is also true we spend a larger share of our GDP on the military than our more civilized Western peers, however the collective might of the West (less the US forces) is so pitiful they would have a hard time taking on a backward third world country. Take Mali for instance. The French have their hands out looking for US assistance because they couldn't tackle that third world problem of their former colony and current sphere of influence. Libya was Europe's intervention, yet they needed the US to do all the heavy lifting. Feckless Europe has fallen so far behind that NATO integration has become increasingly challenging due to the lack of basic military competencies in the members of the alliance.

WWII ended many decades ago and the cold war is over. Get the US out of Germany--let them defend themselves. Get the US out of Japan--why is it our responsibility to be Japan's military just because their neighbors are racist and fear an independent, self sufficient Japan?

Wars for oil? Just as they should have been. Now that the US is supplying itself with more of its energy needs with a path to self sufficiency, I say we cut the Middle East loose. Why should the US have to tend to the former colonies, now countries left by the wake of European meddling. Europe screwed up the Middle East in the first place when they created the modern nation-states there--I say let them have it back.

RE: The US is #1!
While I agree that the rest of the west's armed forces are shit. Certain western countries are no where near the military power houses they use to be (UK, France, Germany, Spain (though in saying that, Spain hasn't been a miliatry power house since like the 1600's but w/e) and a few others).
BUT, they haven't needed to be.

Like you say (and what I said but w/e), the US has acted as the Wests armed forces, and still does.
I think if you saw a decrease in US military you would see a rise in other Western countries military, I think notably Australia, France and the UK.
The issue for you guys is that the US likes being all powerful. You like to walk around waving a big ass flag pretending you're the king of the worlds because your army is big. While the rest of us (western countries) are more then happy to let you, afterall it's not 10% of our GDP being spent on a wasteful armed forces.

That will change soon I believe. I see the US being unable to continue being the world police for even 10 more years. As a matter of fact we are in the process of kicking a shit-load of people out of the Navy, Army, and Airforce...probably the Marines and Coast Guard as well. The tough part will be severing the ties between the 'military-industrial-complex' and our politicians, but it will happen out of necessity as time marches on and our purse strings get shorter. At leas that is my prediction. Get your gay-ass camo on muffs.

Not that I have any room to talk...the U.S. Navy has a record of having the gayest uniforms imaginable. Although I will say I am quite the stud in my dress blues, though my testicles aren't exactly fans of being crushed every time I have to squeeze into them. You're welcome ladies.

I was shocked for a second at the coincidence of the picture you picked there, at least until I saw the little flags on the mens arms and noticed it was NZ armed forces.
The lady in the middle, Helen Clark, was our Prime Minister for 9 years (3 terms in a row) and is now 3rd or 4th highest position in the UN handling the money (not actually sure if she's still in that position but I assume she is).
She took no shit that women, always NZ first. Pity she was Labor and not National but w/e.

As for camo, it doesn't do it for me, and I sure as fuck would never wear camo. If I HAD to go into a brance of the armed forces it would be the navy simply so I wouldn't have to wear that ugly camo.
Though I'm not feeling the ugly navy hats and that horrible gay scarf.

Quote:Im curious earmuffs what should we spend it on in your eyes?

I haven't thought about it like stop spending money on armed forces, spend it on X. Also thought of it on a more macro sense as reducing spending on the armed forces is but only one change of a number of changes.

If I had to say though, off the top of my head how about start with the XX% of people below the poverty line and move up from there. Free healthcare, better education, better infrustructure (public transport focus), paying off the countries debt etc.. etc..

I don't talk gay, I don't walk gay, it's like people don't even know I'm gay unless I'm blowing them.

Be nice to the Australians. They are a blast to work with. But yes, our uniforms suck...

Only worked with one Aussie, and met a few more. They were fine. One of the men was a colonel who wore a strange cowboy-like hat with his uniform. Personally I preferred the French, which kind of surprised me...of course they did provide me with alcohol several times so that probably influenced my opinion Tongue The country I least like working with? The Germans, who I felt were a bit snobbish and uppity, the Romanians who didn't do shit but get in the way, and the Poles, who had some particularly disgusting habbits like blowing their noses into the sink and hand-washing their underwear in the sink in which I had to brush my teeth Shocking . Of course that is only based on my personal experiences and could be isolated incidents, and not an accurate representation of the countrymen on the whole.
