The art of spoiling yourself
It has been my observation that a lot of people just don't know how to spoil themselves.

My very unscientific and very small survey shows that people who never spoil themselves seem to be less content with their lives. On the other end of the spectrum you have people who can't stop spoiling themselves and end up in trouble for it. And then there is a happy medium that just provides contentment with life.

So, do you spoil yourself sometimes? And how do you do it?

Let's define "spoiling" as doing something you really like, it can be anything you really enjoy, and you do it "just because" and it's not part of a routine.

For instance, I like a long bath with a good book and a glass of champagne.

Or, if it's a hot day, I like to sit in the shade with that book and drink an ice cold Hefeweizen (beer).

Or, I like to shop for plants to put in my garden. (Gonna run out of space eventually and will undoubtedly find something else).

Or, I like to tour all the aquarium/fish stores in the area just to see all the different fish.

So, what do you do to spoil yourself?

RE: The art of spoiling yourself
I buy myself Star Trek and Farscape junk on ebay. Or video games or science books on amazon. Or a bottle of vodka, or an offensive Tshirt. Back when I lived in a bigger city I'd go to actual bookstores to buy used books, but there are no bookstores here so I have to shop online. That kinda bums me out because I'd find really cool stuff sometimes for cheap in used bookstores.

Video games count because I hardly ever play them anymore, so it's out of the ordinary.

Winter: I think you all know what I do during this season by now.. and drink a lot of Stouts.

Summer: Do some sort of workout routine. Last year was martial arts on the heavy bag. This year it's Insanity... and drink a lot of Flemmish Sours.

Random: Go out and eat sushi or some other delightful meal.

I am not a real girly girl and am not into clothes and jewelry and stuff, but I do get my nails done regularly and pedicures through the spring and summer. I don't bring my phone in with me, I just relax knowing that no one can reach me for an hour or two.

That's my big splurge on myself...

I'm not anti-social. I'm pro-solitude. Sleepy

Does watching porn count?
Is it neccesary for it not to be routine?

I don't really like going outside.
It's too damn "peopley" out there....

RE: The art of spoiling yourself
I took up several hobbies.

Cars, flying, computer games. They keep me busy, and I love all of them! This is the first summer I've had in a long time where I've kept myself so busy that I actually have to take days away from doing that stuff to "relax" because it wears me out. This weekend is my birthday party and I'm finishing up working on my motorcycle so I can go ride. Other nights I go flying. Other nights I check out the stars with my telescope. Other nights I work on my cars...

I definitely feel that you have to find some hobby or hobbies that you love and really have some fun.

I kind of don't see the point of working just to work. I see WAY too many people say, "Someday I will do x." or "I want to do x... *sigh* someday." and they just procrastinate. They work to pay bills. They come home and go to sleep. They wake up, work some more, so they can pay more bills. Nah, fuck that, GO DO STUFF NOW. You are the youngest you'll ever be at this exact moment, so fuck it, go have some fun because you're just getting older!

I have one friend who got tired of it. He bought an economical car and travels around the united states doing music lessons for some interesting instruments I cannot recall the name of. Anyway, he does just enough to pay for gas money, car and insurance, and goes from place to place to go flying. He's quite the traveler. He just loves life. Loves traveling, loves seeing things, loves enjoying himself and he gets that you don't have to go necessarily stay in one place. You can explore if you want to. You just need a plan and some time to work the kinks out, and in good time, you'll figure it out. Super cool guy.

Well, if it's routine it's not a special treat, although I guess it should count because of the calming effect.

I don't know how Weeping

If I ever get some money that I'm owed, I think I'm gonna buy a motorcycle though. I tell my wife it is to save money on gas, which is very true, but I really just want one, and she knows it. My ideal day of spoiling myself would be riding my imaginary motorcycle to a nice pond, catching a boatload of fish, then going camping with my wife in my own camper, which is also imaginary.
