The console is of the devil
Ok , I have to come clean here. I HATE consoles. I am a pure PC gamer .
I wouldn't mind so much , but it seems everyone these days seems to be playing to the console crowd.
I tried Skyrim , seemed a great game , until I open an inventory and HELLLO , here's the 4 points of death , specially tailored for the D-pad.
Recently I tried the Witcher 2 , I game I was looking forward to for ages. And surprise , surprise , the inventory menu is radial , to suit a D-pad. There are chase sequences and quick-time events and the combat system went from something as elegant as KOTOR to a standard crap action game with light and heavy attack plus spell and item.
I wouldn't hate consoles so much if developers after gave a damn to port games properly to PC. I have a mouse dammit , i can use that to navigate the inventory.
At least have the decency to make a new UI , make it DLC and I'll buy it just take your console controls and shove'em....

OK , I just had to get that out of my system. Sorry for the rage post.
So any thoughts/opinions from fellow PC gamers ?

NOTE : Let me be perfectly clear , I don't hate the console players (that much) , my ire is aimed at devs who are too f-ing lazy to design a new UI for use on PC

RE: The console is of the devil
Consoles are nice and all but I'm not a fan of joysticks and the like. I grew up on pc and mouse and keyboard are my best friends. Not to mention it's hard to beat a finely tuned gaming pc for graphics and frame rate for the best detail. Consoles are forever optimized for the best neutral.

I still prefer mouse/keyboard.

RE: The console is of the devil
I'm no elitist, I can see benefits to both sides of the argument.

Isn't it more important to just enjoy the games instead of bashing the platform? Though the Wii is still horrible. Wink

But seriously, I play on both console and PC. I prefer console. PC has some great benefits but also some major drawbacks. Such as expense. Sure your top of the line gaming PC can play the best games out now at incredible resolution with amazing frame rates.... But the next batch of games will destroy your PC, unless you update your graphics card, and ram, and all of your drivers.
Or oops your three hour porn session has left your computer open for a multitude of viruses designed to bypass even the most current virus protection software. Leaving your hard drive a steaming pile of shit. More of a guy problem.
Cheaters while not PC exclusive are more of a problem on that format.
Benefits I can think of include usually free online gaming (minus MMORPGS) more comfortable control schemes for RPGs and FPSs, though I've come to enjoy the joystick format more for shooters.
Higher res graphics if you can afford the hardware, and the ability to chat via keyboard without having to buy one of those dumb controller add-ons.

Benefits to console gaming include, One initial hardware cost. Local multiplayer. Quicker gaming without massive install times. Less gaming hiccups. (due to less variables) more streamlined online due to less variables again as everyone is using the same hardware. more streamlined controller options due to limitations. Which also means I can usually play one game and easily learn the controls to another game as they will usually be similar.
No risk of virus. I can borrow games from friends without having to scan over system requirements.

Well all I see on Saitek's site are PC peripherals and Cessna controllers and a chess trainer. I'm guessing you meant a different Saitek ?

Again , I have no issue with consoles as long as devs actually give me a PC user interface. It's horribly uncomfortable to play some of these games on PC. It's manageable but I hate this trend. I'll eventually have to buy a controller to play PC games , that's how bad i see this becoming.
And I don't think any console players will be forced to buy a keyboard or mouse any time soon. So it just feels like I'm pushed aside.

RE: The console is of the devil
I can appreciate our frustration, but I'm with Lucradis on this- pretty much for the reasons he listed. The graphics on the current gen consoles are amazing still, even after years of not being upgraded.

I play both consoles and PC. I cannot afford to frequently upgrade my PC- I would have to upgrade both mine and my wfie's PC at the same time, for one. Nor do I have the patience to try to keep up w/ the latest PC hardware. There is also the fact that FPS games feel more natural to me on console than PC. I didn't think they would have first, but now that I'm used to it it's hard to go back. I tend to use PC for MMO's, sandbox games, RTS, etc. And console for action/FPS games.

RE: The console is of the devil
I understand the feeling of being left behind in a changing game market.
I feel the same way actually. Only it's the download generation that's killing me.
I like hard copies. I really do.
Not only that but I feel left behind so far as online components in videogames. The multiplayer has become the only component most companies spend any time with anymore. So I have to buy my game nowadays, pay for the internet, pay for my gold membership, pay for download content that should have been included in the original purchase to begin with, and then in two months realize the only component of the game (multiplayer) has been abandoned by the developer to make another game.
So now I own.... what? an empty server that will disappear altogether in a years time?

Not to sound my age or anything, but one of the best gaming times of my life was back in the goldeneye days... booze, buddies, and goldeneye. We did that for a solid year with the occasional fallback afterwards. The last time I played a multiplayer game for longer than maybe two months was halo reach... and I only play that when I'm horribly bored. Not because it's awesome... because it isn't.

RE: The console is of the devil
I agree with the UI aspect, if a game is designed around a console, then the PC port better at least work well with the PC. I'm playing Skyrim on PC and the UI is terrible for a PC player- very inefficient and frustrating. I think Skyrim really crapped out on that aspect. It felt like they flipped PC gamers the bird on that one.

Saitek - programmable controllers that work. If your gaming pc is windows7, just hook an Xbox 360 controller into the usb drive and kwitcher bitchin. Big Grin

Btw, I paid 450 for this laptop and 300 for the XBox; can you get a gaming pc comparable to the 360 for 750 or less? Ah, no. Tongue
