RE: The difference between hoping and praying
I think difference is pretty clear.
Hope is wanting for something to happen. Praying is asking someone for something to happen.

RE: The difference between hoping and praying
I think the difference is this:
hope: i really want this, and i will try my best to make it happen
prayer: i really want this, so i'll ask my personal buttler(god) to make it true while i do nothing

I don't really like going outside.
It's too damn "peopley" out there....

Well, kinda. I mean, when your parents are on the operating table you hope they come out of it OK, but there's zero you can do to make it happen. ... You hope the next card in a poker game will give you the best hand, but there's nothing you can do to make it happen.

Check out my atheism blog. It's just a blog, no ads, no revenue, no gods.

RE: The difference between hoping and praying
All good answers so far.

There's another difference.

To pray is to buy into a belief system, which often places the victim under the control of the priest or preacher.

Hope has no attached agendas.

RE: The difference between hoping and praying
1) Please god, don't let my house burn down. A prayer.
2) I hope my house don't burn down. Not a prayer.
The two are very similar but with one major difference. When you say the second phrase you don't expect it to have an affect on the outcome. Otherwise it would be a prayer.

Sounds very similar to what I said.

I don't hope or pray.
I work and get it done.
