I think the chance would be ?/5 and the related maths is more to the actual point, the example with the coin is not the proper point but shows it.

I have no idea what a chance of ?/5 means and you still haven't said what you think the related math is

The related maths is probability, I do not want to advance the topic without basic understanding firstly from participants in the discussion. There is 5 results you are picking 1 of 5 results.

Each individual result has probability 1/2 heads and 1/2 tails. Pick any one of the 5 and there is 50/50 chance it is heads. Don't matter if you picked the first, second, third, fourth, or fifth. I think you may be confusing the probability of any given sequence of five coin tosses (say all heads or all tails, e.g.) with the probability of any individual toss. The probability of any particular sequence of 5 coin tosses is 1 in 32 or about 3%.

That is not the question, if you toss a coin 5 times and write down the results, then ask someone to pick a result, i.e all 5 results could be heads, so the picker has a 5/5 chance of heads in this outcome.

Take 5 coins, toss each coin and place the coin on a table or counter, result side up.

They insist that if we were to then hide the 5 results and asked another party to pick one of the 5 results, that they would have a 1/2 chance of heads.

This smells of a gotcha question.

Why are you using 5 coins? You only need one.

You are not picking from 5 results, coin has only 2 sides. You are picking 1 out of 2 possible results. Thus, your chances are 1/2.

OK?
