The meaning of true love
Hello everybody, I just want to share a quote with you from a man named "Dan Barker" who use to be an evangelical preacher but is now an atheist. I was just a little curious to hear from the rest of you whether or not you agree with what he has said. I know I do lol!!! And besides from that what is your opinion on this quote overall and what does it mean to you? I would love to hear! Smile

“I do understand what love is, and that is one of the reasons I can never again be a Christian. Love is not self denial. Love is not blood and suffering. Love is not murdering your son to appease your own vanity. Love is not hatred or wrath, consigning billions of people to eternal torture because they have offended your ego or disobeyed your rules. Love is not obedience, conformity, or submission. It is a counterfeit love that is contingent upon authority, punishment, or reward. True love is respect and admiration, compassion and kindness, freely given by a healthy, unafraid human being.”
― Dan Barker

RE: The meaning of true love
"Love" is one of those corner stone words of humanity that is almost criminally ill defined.

How can you use a word to describe the feeling-

-that justifies dying or killing for someone
-that justifies dying or killing for a group of people
-that justifies dying or killing for an idea
-towards a sexual lover
-towards a family member
-towards your child
-towards a friend
-towards a pet
-towards a food product
-towards a consumer good

And so on... there has to be different classes or words for these that should be standardized.

For no matter how much I use these symbols, to describe symptoms of my existence.
You are your own emphasis.
So I say nothing.

Love has no "meaning", but it's purpose is for breeding.

You may be confusing the words "love" and "intercourse"

Very true! But definitely not mutually exclusive

I dunno man. I mean, I love bacon....but I ain't fuckin no pig. [Image: sad-nope-smiley-emoticon.gif]

But now I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma, a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it as though it had an underlying truth.

False equivocation.
