The military and Trump
Trump has a big infatuation with men in uniform and their leaders.

Some of these leaders weighed in today:

No place for racial hatred or extremism in @USMC. Our core values of Honor, Courage, and Commitment frame the way Marines live and act.

GEN Mark A. Milley

@ArmyChiefStaff
The Army doesn't tolerate racism, extremism, or hatred in our ranks. It's against our Values and everything we've stood for since 1775.

Gen. Dave Goldfein

@GenDaveGoldfein
I stand with my fellow service chiefs in saying we're always stronger together-it's who we are as #Airmen

I opened a new thread for this because I think this is just the beginning of developing dynamics between trump and the military.

Lotta voices condemning racism and nazism today. Duh. Not too many condemning the voice that should be condemned, though, from the cohort that most needs to condemn that voice. When the GOP & the military & other righthand alphabet groups begin condemning trump by name, THEN we'll know we're getting somewhere. Otherwise it's empty hot air.

I see it as a veiled threat to the orange pumpkin.

Short of a military coup they can't do much. So there isn't much of a threat. The only ones with the theoretical power to remove him, sit in congress and senate.

Pretty sure those in the military can't condemn him by name.

Now the GOP....yes, yes they can, and should, and to be fair I'm seeing more actually do this.

What else could Trump say or do? Jesus Christ go on YouTube and watch the countless videos of Trump denouncing racists. This is another made up phony bullshit story. Fake News. Politico and CNN pulled some shady shit with that transcript of Trump's speech. Changed the line about the violent anti-protestors to "they came charging at us" instead of "they came charging at 'em" to make it look like Trump was saying he was a part of the white nationalists. Then they had to backtrack and change it this morning, although the damage has been done. Nobody ever pays attention to corrections.

Politicians set the tone, so if we all agree then it cannot be lip service. The GOP pulled the same fake scorning during the run. 45 isn't a no name private citizen. Politicians have a far different role and a bigger responsibility than a private citizen.

I am glad these leaders said this. BUT this is not enough, 45 cannot and should not be rewarded with more time in office if these military leaders agree, and if people like Mitt and McCain and Rubio and now even McConnell. NO MORE LIP SERVICE, fucking prove it. Impeach 45!

Correct. Politics is the job of civilians, not the military.

From Gen Douglas MacArthur's speech to the students at West Point, May 12, 1962, which still stands as the standard for military conduct :

" Others will debate the controversial issues, national and international, which divide men's minds. But serene, calm, aloof, you stand as the Nation's war guardians, as its lifeguards from the raging tides of international conflict, as its gladiators in the arena of battle. For a century and a half you have defended, guarded and protected its hallowed traditions of liberty and freedom, of right and justice. Let civilian voices argue the merits or demerits of our processes of government: whether our strength is being sapped by deficit financing indulged in too long, by federal paternalism grown too mighty, by power groups grown too arrogant, by politics grown too corrupt, by crime grown too rampant, by morals grown too low, by taxes grown too high, by extremists grown too violent; whether our personal liberties are as firm and complete as they should be; these great national problems are not for your professional participation or military solution. "

But what they can do is remind the President (as has been done with several former Presidents) that military officers are sworn to protect the Constitution "against all enemies, foreign and domestic" and are NOT sworn to follow the directives of any President that are not constitutional.

45 is his own worst enemy, the best thing for us to do, is not armed conflict, but keep poking the bear with ridicule and condemnation and he will jump the shark all by himself.

Somebody got their marching orders and obeyed like a good little boy.
