Now that is actually a good statistic to show standard of living.

1st - US - $52,607
17th - Finland - $35,707

edit: ooooooooooooooooooooo I found some more stats.
This time cost of living! Excited? I know I am!

Surprise surprise.
List of countries by cost of living (most expensive to least)

1st - Norway
2nd - Switzerland
3rd - Japan
4th - Monaco (bit of a bummer, wouldn't mind living there)
5th - Australia

9th - Netherlands
11th - Sweden
14th - Finland
19th - Singapore
34th - USA
79th - China

So not only are you earning less, but you're paying more.
huh.

So have we learned something today? I think we have.
Shall we recap on what we have learned tonight?
- Get to know what the stats mean
- Don't imply they mean something they don't mean
- Socialism is not superior to non-socialism just as non-socialism is not superior to socialism
- You jelly of US bro?

Thatcher had it right...the left would rather see the poor poorer so long as the rich were less rich.

Brilliant, exactly exactly right. Hit the nail on the head.
People don't see the overall picture. They don't see the growth as a whole, all they see is that their neighbor has a slightly nicer car then them and they flip shit.
If people stopped worrying about what others have in comparison to them and worry about what they personally have then maybe we'd have less bitching and more action.

Wait..... there are people that give a shit about a AAA rating other than the political party not in charge?

You obviously never experienced the utter depression of Thatcher's Britain or the idiocy of Section 28. The Conservative government off that era critically wounded the education system, NHS (I know we brit's go on about it...), Work place relations, Housing policy , reinforced political divide's and so much more. Thatcher had some bloody excellent qualities and got allot left! But she was also an exceedingly polarizing force on the politics of the time and couldn't back down even when she knew she'd miscalculated ("You turn if you want to. The lady's not for turning."). She was a force for change and brought in fair few good policies and yes I do admire her despite being pinko/leftie/commie/hippy sonofa female canine, but then politics was never an simple, rational or coherent game.

Politics at it's best is the art of compromise, we have understand that the world is imperfect broken even, understanding compromise isn't surrender it's accepting reality and making the best of a s*** sandwich.

Hell the problem is we haven't found a good model for governing yet, democracy fails in one critical point the majority is NOT always left and seldom can string a coherent thought together. I could list the failings of other systems of governance we all know them by rote.

sorry for flying off topic on my 1st post. btw.

Anyway to my point. Credit ratings are all well and good. But we need to understand accept that life isn't easily quantifiable, it cannot be healthily reduced to an equation. We broke the system and have yet to acknowledge how f'd we truly are, blaming the left, right or Murphy isn't going help while we went skydiving with a feather, one stocking, a bag of roasted nut's and a prayer instead off a parachute!

Right it's bloody stupid o'clock, I shouldn't post this late at night/early in the morning. See ya all later.

Who decided 'Right' was correct?

The problem isn't with credit rating's, it's that we have broken the system. Blaming the left, right or murphy is rather too late! We are so divorced from reality that we have gone skydiving with a feather, one stocking, a bag of peanut's, a prayer and no bloody parachute.

I was just quoting Thatcher, I don't know enough to support or not support her policies.

I know enough and I do not support what she did. Mind you, I wasn't even born. Big Grin

Singapore has 88.03
Finland has 84.30

Actually, Finland isn't even the highest.
As of June 2012:

Norway 90.37
Switzerland 88.83
Singapore 88.03
Luxembourg 87.90
Sweden 86.79
Finland 84.30
Canada 84.26
Denmark 83.52
Netherlands 83.07
Germany 82.24

It's worth noting that all those countries have AAA.
Just what the OP is talking about is Luxemburg, Netherlands and Germany have a negative rating so that if they do not improve in the next few months that they will be downgraded.

The rating system is a good indication of how good a country is at balancing the books but hardly a good system on determining standard of living and hardly proves one method is better then an other (social method) which is what the OP is implying.

Funny 5 of them country's on the top are socialist in thinking. I don't see it such a bad way to go. Only in America it is demonized. It makes me laugh. Oh the country's are: The Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Finland.

If these countries were socialist, they would not be as successful as they are right now. Socialism is theoretical, and not practical.

Not only was Thatcher right about socialism, if you watch the youtube I posted upthread, you will see that she was rather prescient about the Euro fiscal fiasco going on right now when she argued that a common currency was a sure fire way to lose sovereignty. She saved Great Britain from being hitched to the PIIGS wagon.

Regarding the allusion to ignorant masses running the show in a Democracy, William F Buckley has a good relevant quote, "I'd rather entrust the government of the United States to the first 400 people listed in the Boston telephone directory than to the faculty of Harvard University." Or, as Reagan would often like to say "The trouble with our liberal friends is not that they are ignorant; it's that they know so much that just isn't so." If only the left had complete power to run things, all would be well with the world, eh?

Oh really? Socialism is very much practical, as I have lived in one of the true socialist countries.

But as Ohio said, look again at the way Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Finland think and how their social policies are...

It depends. What kind of socialism are we talking about?
