The power of words: which way motivates you best ?
OK. My mother always told me "don't forget brushing your teeth, otherwise you will feel the pains when you become toothless because of your bad habits." when I was at home. Did it work every well? Well, you can imagine.

But if it had been rephrased into "don't forget to brush your teeth. Make them clean, so that they will last longer, which you will find extremely wonderful when you still have you teeth while others don't." I would say "OK mum. But I am no kid anymore. Don't say it in this way again." and did that much more quickly.

When facing obstacles, what you say to yourself works best? "I'd better do it fast, so that I can show my competence or even get unexpectedly rewarded." or "Don't procrastinate, otherwise it is going to be really ugly and messy."

According to my unprofessional observation, there are four ways in which people, including yourself, are able to motivate you:

A. Do something, if so ...
B. Do something, don't something, if not so ...
C. Don't do something, do something, if so ...
D. Don't do something, if not so ...

A is more of giving directions. And D is more of giving warnings. And B,C are combinations of A and D in different orders and with different emphasis. Here's an example,

A. Post something interesting, if so people may add you to their Buddy Lists.
B. Post something interesting, don't troll, if not so people may add you to their Ignore Lists.
C. Don't troll, post something interesting, if so people may add you to their Buddy Lists.
D. Don't troll, if not so people may add you to their Ignore Lists.

OK.

Please kindly vote for the way that motivates you best (the clearest way in which the power of the words you feel is the strongest) and discuss with me why it is that way, if you are interested.

You can see from my signature that I will definitely choose A. But actually C works best with me. Maybe because it both notifies me with the possible danger, but also tells me what benefits I will have, plus with the emphasis on the benefits.

Congratulations, since you can be motivated in various ways, away from the harmful and closer to the beneficial.

Threats of bad consequences make me want to explore if it's true.... same thing with promises of good consequences.

So I'd likely be trolling as well as writing interesting posts...

Umm...42? Consider

But now I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma, a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it as though it had an underlying truth.

Maybe if would be clearer if you replaced the word something Huh

A. Do (Insert Word/term/action), if so ...
B. Do (Insert Word/term/action), don't (Insert Word/term/action), if not so ...
C. Don't do (Insert Word/term/action), do (Insert Word/term/action) if so ...
D. Don't do (Insert Word/term/action), if not so ...

I cant pick just one nor do I think any of them are more suited as I think I use all of them, it depends on the situation.

For no matter how much I use these symbols, to describe symptoms of my existence.
You are your own emphasis.
So I say nothing.
