RE: The time to ban is now
This is the whole freedom-of-speech issue in microcosm. It's akin to whether the WBC should be allowed to picket funerals or a neo-Nazi group to march through a neighborhood of Holocaust survivors.

Stark has articulated the TTA position clearly: Here, freedom of expression trumps virtually everything else. The only exceptions are porn, nudity, spamming, and threats of violence. Beyond that, a poster is free to be as vile, disruptive, abusive, and stupid as s/he wants to be.

Personally I lean towards Dom's position. There are always limits to freedom of expression; the question is where to draw the line. I would draw the line so as to be able to get rid of people who are clearly abusing others. I'll let everyone into my house, but if someone starts trashing the place, I have no problem grabbing them by the shoulders and throwing them out on their ass.

That said, I respect Stark's idealism in wanting to keep TTA a paragon of free expression.

What, then, can we do when we encounter a Bishadi? "Community policing" sounds good, but thinking about it, I'm not sure I know what that means. Policing implies not only vigilance but also the ability to arrest, doesn't it? What's the analogous ability here?

I guess what I'm asking is, given that vile and abusive people won't be banned solely for that kind of behavior, what can we do as a community to discourage it? Simply ignore the behavior, hoping they'll go away on their own when no one responds to them? Pile up on them, being just as abusive back? Bombard them with requests that they either change their ways or leave voluntarily? Be as supportive as possible to the target of the abuse? I could use some clarification here.

ETA: When I wrote this I hadn't read Lucradis's post, where he answered some of the questions I asked above:

Quote:If he's a dick, reciprocate. Or ignore. Defend people as a community. You have a voice, use it properly. Removing everyone someone doesn't desire is an effective way to alienate a large portion of the population.

Any other thoughts on community policing?

Religious disputes are like arguments in a madhouse over which inmate really is Napoleon.

RE: The time to ban is now
I've been talking with Stark and I am going to open a new thread on this that will be addressing the issue in general and not this case in particular.

Lots of ways to skin a cat (gee, I hate that saying, why am I using it?) and lots of good minds here so we'll tackle it. Please look for a new thread on this.

I'll call it "community policy". See you there. Give me a minute to get it written up.

You question was basic common sense; the community already knows that biology and entopy have contradicted, since day one.

You are on a thread, about evolution and have no idea, the reason evolution is not understood to the absolute of science, is because the current models conflict, and always have.

You basically, just made yourself look about as stupid as a person, talking science on life, could.

go lay by your dish!

I don't want him banned, but I certainly want someone to give him a warning. His personal attacks have been unwarranted against me, but I don't know about other people. This isn't about his belief, this is about how personal he takes it.

Logica, the problem is, what sort of warning? How effective is it to warn someone not to do something they are allowed to do?

The answer may come up in the Comunity Policy thread Dom is going to start for us. I hope you can chime in.

Just visiting.

IMO mods here are way to pacifist in regards to banning trolls.

That about covers it from my perspective. If someone strikes me as a dick I will show them what a proper prick looks like. I've got at least 3 decades of practice (maybe 4 if you count those ants I tortured with a magnifying glass when I was 10). If you lack sufficient prick experience, or are otherwise just uncomfortable with it, provide support for the bullied.

Where's the sport in that, Tim? I'd like to see if they can take it as well as they can dish it out. Not only that, but the troll might learn something. I saw Egor change from His Royal Fucking Prickness to just another ordinary asshole here.
