  • I think it's dying, and probably it should if it's going to keep going in the direction that it has been. It has stopped preaching the gospel of the one true Jesus Christ and has moved to a more watered-down, vague gospel that is "non-offensive" to people who believe in different versions of Jesus (such as Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses). For example, a few years ago I listened to a message about the power of positive thinking, with God only mentioned a handful of times and Jesus not mentioned at all. That's not the Gospel, that's New Age spiritualism, and it has no place under the banner of Christ.
  • Well that's OK, having a booth at Jesus Fest isn't supposed to be for profit, it's an act of worship!
  • And for today's "Heresy Watch"...we have this female "pastor" who wrote a book talking about how it's actually OK for Christian singles to have sex as long as it is "mutually pleasurable and affirming," basically making the argument that it's "not fair" for Christian singles to not be able to enjoy sexual intimacy, especially singles who are single by circumstance. No, Mrs. McCleneghan, it is not "our unwillingness to open ourselves up to the abundance of life's created goodness...that often leaves us feeling empty." What leaves us feeling empty is when we try to put created idols where only Jesus should be. What leaves the celibate feeling empty is when they don't allow Jesus to be ENOUGH for them, instead buying into the lie that humans "need" sex for anything other than reproduction, and that God is being "unfair" by mandating that sex be constrained to the confines of marriage. "But who are you, O man, to answer back to God?" - Romans 9:20a
  • If you're Living Your Best Life Now, you're headed for hell.
  • Scripture overshadows opinion. It doesn't matter what I "think" or how I "feel." All that matters is what God has declared to be true in scripture.

This one jumped out at me:
I'm so glad to have gotten my 60 day coin today at Celebrating Recovery for conquering my issues with Pride.

I just looked up the Celebrating Recovery folks. I was kind of disappointed--I had hoped there would be a separate program for every sin...

I do have to wonder what the people in that program with significant substance abuse issues think of the guy who's joined because he's just too darned proud (and then humble-brags about his 60-day coin).

You looked more up on them than I did then lol, most of my knowledge comes from Facebook and people who talk about going. And completely agree with you, it does make one wonder about how the people there for serious things like drug and alcohol usage feel about that sort of thing; one of the guys who goes to CR with the person I quoted, is there for drug abuse actually (my dad's former doctor who was abusing and selling oxycontin).

Need to think of a witty signature.

Saw this on twitter today.

A few more:
"I'm just here to get some good works in for Judgement."

"Ladies and gentlemen, I submit to you absolute and irrefutable proof of the doctrine of total depravity." (Followed by a link to a heinous sex crime.)

"I've said this for years: I believe that Satan is waging a war specifically against our youth in order to take them out of the game before they can become strong enough in their faith to oppose him. He sent two of his best agents to take out this girl in the most heinous and brutal way imaginable. " (About a 14 year old rape and murder victim.)

"Global warming is a communist conspiracy."

"You should believe in teh [sic] Illuminati. Their [sic] working with Hilary [sic] to bring about a one world goverment [sic] in Revelations [sic]." (It's Revelation...personal pet peeve.)

But Comrade Morondog, I thought this was one of my two days off a year to praise the Communist Party!

That movie will never lose its laugh value.

So's yours. Tell me something, you being a Catholic, do you follow what the Pope says? And if he says something demonstrably fatuous - e.g. about abortion or something like that - do you go along with it or do you think "Well fuck it, I guess I'll be a bad Catholic over this one issue"?

What's with people and not using google? Today on facebook I spotted the claim that "the biggest genocide in human history was the US government slaughtering 100 million native Americans" Rolleyes Good Christ! It literally took seconds of google to confirm that it was bullshit.

I mean for FUCKS sake. Angry

Thanks, and that's an interesting question. Because the Pope only speaks "infallibly" when invoking an Ex Cathedra statement, of which there have only ever been two and both relate to Marian doctrines. (Which I accept, or at least think I do, and go to the Holy Days of Obligation related to them.) So the Church itself allows for a built in mechanism for disagreement without necessarily being a "bad Catholic".

For instance, I definitely don't agree with Francis on LGBT rights. To many that would make me a bad Catholic, but I don't tend to self report as such. Likewise, I don't see an issue with married clergy and think people tend to forget this was instituted for more monetary reasons, the Church being angry that clergy were leaving their land, wealth, and goods to their children rather than returning it to the centralized control. One of my exes had a priest who converted from Episcopalianism and had a wife, and had a dispensation to act as a priest in Catholicism despite that, and the world most certainly didn't end. If anything, it seemed to help that he wasn't facing his own problems all alone.

(This entire reply also probably constitutes a dumb thing a theist says, depending on one's Point of View.)

Edit: From Facebook, on a story about 5 Jewish community centers getting anonymous bomb threats, "it has already begun. Hate has filled the world. Jews & Christians will be the old and new marters [sic] of the age of hate and evil that is now upon us."
