RE: Things that should not be said in your presence
"Are you getting enough protein?"

"The Bible says you should eat meat."

"When are you getting married?"

"When are you going to have kids?"

And like Thump said, derogatory slurs of any kind.

Marriage is telling people you fuck this person without having to say I fuck this person.

"how many kids do you have?"
"none"
Silence follows, and pity oozes from everyone in the room. Sadcryface

I don't tend to bother starting the topic that I didn't want to have kids...

Statements when someone dies.

"god called him home"

"you have someone sitting by god's side now, looking out for you"

"god needed another angel"

And assorted other nonsense in that line. Hobo

Some of us who are married might disagree Tongue

I guess technically she's my common law suppose, but the sex is long gone.

He already said he would, I thought?

Anyway, he just needs to remember the rings and the guacamole.

RE: Things that should not be said in your presence
Thump and Jennybee -

Seeing as there are few ways one can use a racial slur without being racist, I tend to agree with you on that, Jenny. In that particular case, there's a direct equivalence between the use of those words (not a problem by itself) and a hostile intent toward those people (the objectionable idea). Racism is a disgusting concept, and I've never understood it, except on the "evolutionary psychology" explanation of tribal xenophobia, but I think that's inadequate and underestimates the power of social constructs... "you've got to be carefully taught". But all that said, I think it's fairly easy to detect the intent of a user of words, and that banning or objecting to the particular terms themselves is silly, however popular it has become to object to language itself, rather than the contextual meaning encoded (or not) in that language.

If a person is racist or otherwise bigoted, scorn and contempt shall rightly follow. But I'd rather offend America's ever-growing force of word-police than spend my life worrying about following some sort of (current, up to date version of) rhetorical purity.

"Theology made no provision for evolution. The biblical authors had missed the most important revelation of all! Could it be that they were not really privy to the thoughts of God?" - E. O. Wilson
