This is so sad
Hi,

I have become fond of the characters in 'Rage'. They are good people, who do what they promise - not like some folks in real life.

How can we bond with nonentities?

I'm confused as to what you're asking. Are you asking literally or are you asking how is it that we bond with nonentities?
If the later I'd say, I dunno, I don't bond well with realentities, ask a theist who has a "personal relationship with jesus" I'm sure they're better qualified to discuss bonding with fake people than I am.

But - the gamer has the advantage as at least they know what their make-believe friend looks and sounds like -- rather that that faceless, voiceless spook that the devout worship.......

The difference between prayer and masturbation - is when a guy is through masturbating - he has something to show for his efforts.

ob,

Good point.

folks,

What I like about the narrative characters in video games is that they do what they say they are going to do and do the same thing next time you go through the game. They are reliable in that respect. Smile

Real people, in the 3d world, can be unreliable and inconsistent (same thing I guess), often with painful results for others. No doubt many of us have been there.

Maybe someone will come up with a game in which characters p*** us around and infuriate us, but to date I haven't had the pleasure. When I go back to Wellspring and talk to Sheriff Black I will get the same deal as always, whatever level the game is set to. Thumbsup

Haha! That was indeed a bad call. Life would have been safer (but duller) with Lisa. Drinking Beverage

RE: This is so sad
That being said, I've bonded with plenty of fictional characters. There have been many characters, especially in video games, that I've admired, respected, appreciated, and even loved. Characters that have helped me explore heroism, experiences pathos, and empathize with. Characters that I've grieved with as I've shared their loss, and grieved over at the loss of them. I just enjoy good characters.

A small and not-at-all exhaustive list of characters that have stuck with me long after I've put their respective games down.

Squal Leonheart and Rinoa Heartilly (Final Fantasy VIII)
Revan and Bastila Shan (Knights of the Old Republic)
Minsc, Iomen, Viconia DeVir, and Aerie (Baulder's Gate II)
Geralt of Rivia, Triss Merigold, Ciri, and Yennefer (The Witcher series)
Jackie Estacado (The Darkness II)
Captain Martin Walker (Spec Ops: The Line)
Commander Shepard, Garrus Vikarian, Tali'Zorah, and Urdnot Wrex (Mass Effect series)
Max Caulfield and Chloe Price (Life is Strange)
Corvo Attano and Emily Kaldwin (Dishonored)
Nick Valentine (Fallout 4)
Adam Jensen (Deus Ex series)
Aveline Vallen, Varric Tethras, Fenris, Isabella, Merril, and Hawke (Dragon Age II)
Naked Snake and The Boss (Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater)
Leon Kennedy (Resident Evil 4)
Kratos (God of War)
Ezio Auditore da Firenze (Assassin's Creed 2)
Glory, Eiger, and Dietrich (Shadowrun: Dragonfall)
Sam Fisher and Anna Grimsdóttír (Splinter Cell: Conviction)
Lara Croft (Tomb Raider 2013)
Bigby Wolf and Snow White (The Wolf Among Us)
Jade (Beyond Good & Evil)
Dawn Star and Silk Fox (Jade Empire)
Red (Transistor)
Rucks (Bastion)
