I have felt old for a long time.
Try mentioning the Carol Burnett Show to a youngen.
I'm there.
For me it's the weird shit like The Munsters, Beverly Hillbillies, Gilligan's Island.
A much weirder and inocent time.
Lets see you make Hogans Heros today.
A slapstick comedy about those wacky Nazis.
I literally heard that Mel Gibson was slated to do a Hogan's Heros movie.
I'm no Nazi but I admit that the very idea of it is Hilarious just on face value.
My Jewish roommates at college were the biggest Hogan's Heros fans on the planet.

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

When we get older we habituate more, which means we pay attention to less. So if our perception of a period of time is based on the details we can recall, the time will seem shorter if we paid less attention.

Further, we typically forget so many memories from our experiences at our jobs when we move to other jobs or retire that whole sections of our lives can seem compressed, even if we experienced them as passing slowly at the time.

One of my favorite couplets in rock lyrics, penned by Bob Seger, gets to the nub of it:

I wish I didn't know now
what I didn't know then.

I wish I didn't know now
what I didn't know then.

I've heard echos of this around here.

Half-wracked prejudice leaped forth, "rip down all hate, " I screamed
Lies that life is black and white spoke from my skull, I dreamed
Romantic facts of musketeers foundationed deep, somehow
Ah, but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now
...

A self-ordained professor's tongue too serious to fool
Spouted out that liberty is just equality in school
"Equality, " I spoke the word as if a wedding vow
Ah, but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now

In a soldier's stance, I aimed my hand at the mongrel dogs who teach
Fearing not that I'd become my enemy in the instant that I preach
My existence led by confusion boats, mutiny from stern to bow
Ah, but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now
