Thursday: Scientists to provide update on gravitational waves
Link

Quote:100 years after Einstein predicted the existence of gravitational waves, the National Science Foundation gathers scientists from Caltech, MIT and the LIGO Scientific Collaboration to update the scientific community on efforts to detect them. (Washington, DC) -- Journalists are invited to join the National Science Foundation as it brings together the scientists from Caltech, MIT and the LIGO Scientific Collaboration (LSC) this Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the National Press Club for a status report on the effort to detect gravitational waves - or ripples in the fabric of spacetime - using the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO). - See more at: http://www.ligo.org/news/media-advisory....UXCk.dpufp

Rumors have been circulating that gravitational waves have been detected. We will see.

Yabut, gravity waves are only a theory - just ask popsthebuilder. Yes

Skepticism is not a position; it is an approach to claims.
Science is not a subject, but a method.

I think that it's possible that once we understand gravity better - we'll have a chance at the stars........

We don't have a chance, trying it on top of fireworks, regardless how sophisticated they may be...

Yes, they believe they have observed gravity waves. Graphics and a bit more info here:

One the one hand, we were very sure that we'd eventually discover them.

On the other - that's still pretty exciting. I mean, we were pretty sure for a pretty long time that we'd find a Higgs boson, too.

... this is my signature!

RE: Thursday: Scientists to provide update on gravitational waves
The gravity waves were produced by the inspiral and merger of two black holes with approximately 30 solar masses each. I would not want to have been matter caught between those two. Or even anywhere within a few light-years of the event.

Can someone explain in the simplest of terms why this is a big deal?

Space surfing, moms. Space surfing.

Don't let those gnomes and their illusions get you down. They're just gnomes and illusions.

See that doesn't help me. Unless it has something to do with the Silver Surfer.
