In the 80s, there were gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transsexuals and crossdressers.

Those were the labels you could choose from. Transsexuals came in M2F and F2M.

There were no other labels.

Lady boys meant something very different to me then - young males for rent to cougars.

At the time, I think that Hawaii was considered to be pretty liberal for specifically permitting people to cross dress in public. In most mainland cities, it was just plain illegal for a person to cross dress in public.
