Tree falls and no ones is there = no sound.
There's a creationist that was making some claims. Here's the full link:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUc-vDFuLlw

Somewhere in the middle he makes the claim that "unless a brain is there to interpret it, the falling tree doesn't make a sound". Now, I'm not sure if he is playing some word games . . . . or unless I misunderstood what he was saying, but seems like the point was, unless a brain, . . . a falling tree makes no sound.

Have fun. The rest of it is worth watching, too.

Well, either he's defining 'sound' as only something perceived by humans, or he has no understanding of what sound is.

Either position is absurd.

Skepticism is not a position; it is an approach to claims.

I'm not picking up good vibrations from his Guy.

That tree sure was giving them off though.

At around 18 mins, even the interviewer was getting dubious.

I couldn't take anymore after that.

That depends on whether you are defining "sound" as the sound waves produced by the falling tree themselves, or as the information that a brain receives via an eardrum.

I think QI covered this one.

I live in the pacific northwest trees fall all the time. Whether I see them fall or not, all make sound.

It should be, if a tree falls in a forest devoid of any living creature with hearing senses in a 25 mile radius.
Does it make a sound ?

RE: Tree falls and no ones is there = no sound.
While saying that sound is only defined by what we perceive is interesting ... There are still sound waves produced by the falling tree, so I say it does make a sound. I suppose it's more about arguing the definition of "sound"?
