The "no living creatures around" was how I took it, . . . but even so, . . . sound itself emminates. Whether or not there is a tool to interpret it [ear, microphone, etc] seems to be a matter of "word play" to me. Perhaps a person trying to sound more intelligent . . . . you know . . . . because he is into science, so he must be right about it!!

Anyway, there are plenty of people on this forum who are far more intelligent in the sciences than me, so I thought I would offer the link up for your interest/amusement/etc.

Yes

I hear this thing from all sorts of people often and this is one of the most retarded and meaningless things I hear.
If tree fell it fell regardless if people seen it or not.

donotwant, the question was, "would it make a sound", . . . and they contend that "sound" only happens when there is a receptical to "hear it", otherwise, it is just waves.

Well if you define sound as somebody hearing waves then no. If you define sound waves as sound then yes.
Is this the point of this thing?

What about ultrasonic sounds like bats make. We can't hear them but they are still sounds.

Schroedinger's tree lives in a quantum superposition of having fallen and not having fallen. It has superimposed sound and silence.

...so if anyone ever asks you about the sound of silence, just answer "Schroedinger's tree", smugly smile, and walk away.

Softly, softly, catchee monkey.

I've surmised that if a tree falls in the forest and no-one is there, it presses it's "Life Alert" button and sounds a lot like "I've fallen, and I can't get up".

Softly, softly, catchee monkey.
