True, but some folks love to play with them. I put those people in the prototroll bucket.

One thing to remember about trolls and the like, nobody can piss you off unless you give them permission to do so.

Sure, I can see they provide a kind of entertainment. I sometimes follow train wreck threads just to watch the mental gymnastics of people desperate to avoid certain conclusions. I've had a couple of half-decent exchanges with a couple of them, but I've given up trying now. Most of the time I could type the response I'm going to get in advance.

I have a website here which discusses the issues and terminology surrounding religion and atheism. It's hopefully user friendly to all.

But for every person "entertained" there could be ten people who are sick of their shit and just move on because "that forum has too many trolls running around without being dealt with."

RE: Trolls
We remove trolls that aim to disrupt "the tempo" of the forum, as Seth calls it.

We leave some that play by the rules and don't cause disruption. If they stay in their own threads, they are not shitting all over our carpets and people can choose to engage or not. If they start messing around in other people's threads, they usually end up gone. Some are never approved for posting in the first place.

The great majority of trolls are gone in short order under this policy, and some remain as "chew toys" for those who want to sharpen their teeth.

It is sometimes a fine line to walk. But it's the trolls who are walking on a rope, never the community. It is admin's job to see to it that the community continues to thrive.

The ban hammer has fallen on some people who pretty much stayed in their own threads. The ban hammer has fallen on people who weren't trolls, and didn't violate any of the rules of the forum. Just exactly what a person will get banned for isn't entirely clear to me. I can understanding banning the necrophiliac. What they wanted to discuss was beyond the comfort level of pretty much all sane people. But some others who have been banned didn't seem to do anything wrong. Earmuffs and Pragmatix come to mind.

My belief that people are basically good is sometimes crushed by the reality that people are basically bad

The necrophiliac was banned for issuing threats, not for being outside the norm.

Muffs - that story spans over years and several admins and you only got to see the tail end.

Pragmatix - I wasn't watching him. Not sure what happened there.

Muffs is not a good example of staff unfairness.

I really appreciate the moderation here, especially after seeing such shitty moderation at other sites.

RE: Trolls
I suppose I'm getting a little tin-foil hatish here, but I wonder if any activity on this forum from disruptive individuals are employed by troll farms.

This is a real problem, and unfortunately there are groups that are paying hundreds, if not thousands of people, to skew opinion in social media.

Someone like TheBorg, and how he behaved, actually makes more sense if he was getting payed to do it, though Poe, Troll or whatever, it's hard to tell the difference between a paid tool or a genuine believer. Weeping
