State Dept. Dissent Cable on Trump’s Ban Draws 1,000 Signatures and growing

https://assets.documentcloud.org/documen...t-Memo.pdf

Quote:Within hours, a State Department dissent cable, asserting that President Trump’s executive order to temporarily bar citizens from seven Muslim-majority countries would not make the nation safer, traveled like a chain letter — or a viral video.
The cable wended its way through dozens of American embassies around the world, quickly emerging as one of the broadest protests by American officials against their president’s policies. And it is not over yet.
By 4 p.m. on Tuesday, the letter had attracted around 1,000 signatures, State Department officials said, far more than any dissent cable in recent years. It was being delivered to management, and department officials said more diplomats wanted to add their names to it.

Stupid, stupid, dumb Christian Trump supporters.

Even Jesus would be banned from the US. As an immigrant he wouldn't make it through customs. Facepalm

Shakespeare's Comedy of Errors.... on Donald J. Trump:

He is deformed, crooked, old, and sere,
Ill-fac’d, worse bodied, shapeless every where;
Vicious, ungentle, foolish, blunt, unkind,
Stigmatical in making, worse in mind.

Same general topic, threads merged.

But as if to knock me down, reality came around
And without so much as a mere touch, cut me into little pieces

Yeah but... he wouldn't be entering that way.

He'd have walked.

If they had been released before the election, he might have won a second term, and history would have been different. I think he also had the same problem as Obama -- an inability to get much done because Congress fought him every step of the way. In both cases, I think the blame can be shared. Congress refused to compromise, but so did Carter and Obama.

Iran refused. They also refused to release the hostages until he left office. Reagan did a fine job of making it seem like it was Carter's fault and there was that failed rescue attempt too that didn't really help.

But Iran's rumbling began before Carter was president -- The Shaw was in trouble during the Ford Administration -- maybe part of the Nixon.

It was Carter, though, who doomed the Shah to overthrow, when he withdrew support for his regime due to human rights violations. Khomeini had actually been a thorn in Pahlevi's side since the early 60s, and while Nixon turned a blind eye to the excesses of the SAVAK, and Ford was essentially clueless about them, Carter ceased aid to Iran, which strained the Imperial government's budget and operations.

Iran refused to release the hostages under Carter's tenure because they were furious that we'd accepted the Shah into New York for cancer treatment, and would have no truck with the President who aided their sworn enemy.

I'm not sure it's fair to blame Carter for the overthrow of the Shah. After all, there was a lot at play. Decades of prior entanglements from prior administrations, the massive fuckery that was the carving up of the Middle East along the lines of former European colonialism after the Treaty of Versailles, the meddling of American corporate oil interests, and the Shah's own oppressive policies. It was a house of cards that did indeed crumble after Carter removed his support, but he wasn't the one who built said house or decided upon using cards in it's construction.

Of course. Carter's blow was the final blow, and heartened the Iranian resistance. It was evident to us living there, in the sense that we saw civil disobedience and resistance rise. It wasn't the only blow, nor even the biggest (the Mossadegh coup takes pride of place there, imo), but Carter's decision to pull our remaining support tipped the scales.

This is a tweet from Al Sharpton.

But guess what, Fuck News is saying Jesus' family was coming back to pay their taxes. Course the whole story is bogus and historically inaccurate... but whatever. One could also argue many of the immigrants returning to the US also pay taxes in one form or another. Furthermore, many of the immigrants from the Middle East who come to our shores are professionals such as doctors, scientists, engineers and computer experts. I read some statistics on this a few months ago but I can't find it now.

But keeping immigrants out of the US has always been a brain drain even if they are the destitute coming here in rags. Immigrants have alway added so much to this country. We wouldn't be the country we are without them.
