I won't be the only one that this affects. Will it be a motivating factor for voting? I usually vote Republican anyway. Democrats probably will still vote Democrat. Will this sway the independents to the right? It just might.

Again I doubt it. My money's on the vast majority of Independents being college educated middle to upper middle class who get their health insurance through their employer. It's a non-issue for them except for maybe the bleeding hearts who see a shitload more poor people insured through Medicare expansion as the humane thing to do. Blush

But don't worry SithLord, it's only temporary. Once Colonel Sanders gets elected you won't have to pay for health insurance at all. Tongue

You might be right about the independents. If they're upper middle class with good insurance from their employers they won't care.

It seems like we traded one group of uninsured (the poor) for another group (lower middle class).

We still have uninsured, they just swapped places. I had a good plan that my employer paid 80% of, that covered everything we needed (visits, prescriptions) but now we'll have nothing.

That, my DarthHelmet friend, is an excellent point worth serious consideration and investigation. I can see how that could be the case. There must be some invesitigative journalist somewhere who has already considered this angle. If not we should do it ourselves and publish it. Girlyman's Dark Lord Helmet is the coolest byline ever. Is this like, an alternative version of "A Day without a Mexican" but "A Day without the 1%ers" instead? I would watch it.

It will be no rich people in socialist society. Accept those who are in the government, of course. They will be rich.
Let's say there are no very rich people who don't like to share most of their money, how can I have free stuff?

It's an enforced plan to make insurance companies rich. You can't expect a for-profit entity to look out for YOUR best interests.

How can you possibly get more "bang for your buck" - by adding a layer of overhead that is in it to maximize it's profits at the expense of it's "customers"?

(It's like the IRS calling you a "customer" -- it's complete dogshit -- a customer is a person who goes to a business willingly, because the business has something the individual wants)

We'd get better health care if we had straight up socialized medicine.

Biker nails it, in my opinion. The ACA didn't drive prices up. That was happening on its own. There is actually evidence it helped stabilize the market because it forced a whole bunch of healthy people under 30 into the market and is forcing them to buy an expensive product they generally do not need. But, the cost of health care, and the burden on families, has been getting into the range of out of control for years. I work for a Fortune 500 company, and I play ~$800 a month for benefits and they suck. My annual out of pocked on top of what I pay for insurance is in the thousands of dollars. I probably spend a little under $15,000 annually just on health care. That's cash out the door. My wife and I both work but we aren't rich by any means and we live in a fairly expensive area (aka as "the northeastern US") and it's a big headache and a lot of money.

If the Democrats were going to push something through completely on their own, without any Republican support, they should have just done a proper UK style socialized medicine deal and been done with it. That is a dramatically better system than ours. But, instead we had to throw this massive bone to the insurance industry and make sure they got richer off the backs of everyone else.

It's a nightmare of a system and it's not getting better. But, if you think repealing the ACA is going to result in a sudden drop in prices, you're sadly mistaken.
