United Church of Canada minister is atheist
She is one of few to come out of the "closet" and speak openly about it. Yes, her job may be at stake. There are some 600 people attending an important conference to decide her fate. It's a very complex matter and the church doesn't want to blow it. There is concern that 150 have left her church but she seems to be garnering support too. I remember many years ago when it dealt with women being ordained (5 or 6 yrs of university education) and standing in the pulpit. The bible says women should remain silent in the church or be stoned. The UCC gave women the right. Then it had to deal with the homosexual issue that they can be ordained and have a pulpit. Churches divided and now that too is acceptable. Memberships have been shrinking at a phenomenal rate with all religions and this is something the UCC will be considering in their decision making. If they fail to allow this woman to maintain her position then the church will have failed to move into the 20th century. I commend this woman for her courage. There are many men of the cloth who no longer believe as they had but for sake of job and community, remain at their posts, remaining silent about their atheism.
