Venezuela is so fucked.
So, like, can we talk about how fucked Venezuela is?
I mean, their economy is basically collapsed. Their currency is worthless, there are huge shortages of food and their unemployment rate is going to skyrocket.
Their government is hugely corrupt, I mean they just arrested the opposition. Well, arrested would be an improvement because nobody actually knows where the government took the opposition. The government has armed revolutionary groups. There are massive, massive protests that are turning violent and people are getting killed over. The US, Canada and Spain have said they will not recognize the current government's decisions. And the government has set up a constituent assembly that will rewrite the constitution but basically acts as a way for the current government to stay in power (because they were gonna lose the next election by a massive margin).
Hell, the government has a program where they reward party supporters with 'benefits' (things like food).

Basically, the government has taken over the country, running it into the ground people be damned, and starting what could be a civil war or at the least some sort of weird revolution like when the communists took over Russia and made USSR. Except instead of a revolution of the people rising up and taking over it's a very unpopular government taking over.

Basically, the whole countries fucked.

With some bad luck, that looks like the US of the future....

Last time I was there, 16ish years ago, it was only a little bit fucked. I had hope, though. See what happens when I engage in optimism? Tongue

I think they still got a shitload of oil. I think that means that the fucking is only just begun as various national interests seek to take advantage of the instability to "liberate" the shitload of oil for the benefit of all humanity and in the name of God.

Venezuela’s oil isn’t high grade and requires lots of refining. When the government put their unqualified people in charge of PDVSA the whole thing began to crumble and that was when Chavez was in power.

When I left in December of 2000 the problems were already brewing, now, 17 years later the place is fucked as Muffs says.

This is all the result of a devious plot set in motion 75 years ago by clever Nazi war criminals who fled there to escape being hanged in the streets from their feet with their dicks and balls hanging out of their mouths. ... Wait, I might be thinking of Argentina. Consider

Yabut, that's not an end of the world problem. Look at Greece for example, yea they fucked up and didn't manage their finances and now they're broke as fuck. BUT their government is stable, their government is working to solve the issue and it will take a while but Greece will eventually recover.

Venezuela had a similar issue, they were able to sell oil and fund many many socialist policies. When the oil prices dropped (and as FC said, their oil isn't exactly the best kind to begin with) the funding for those policies dried up. Where they differ from Greece is that their government isn't stable. People have lost faith in the government and the system. The government is desperately trying to hold onto power and has basically just established a dictatorship, or will officially when they rewrite the constitution. They're actively silencing opposition and rewarding loyal party members. They're reacting violently towards protesters and ignoring the people. They're corrupt. They have no international support. Their money is worthless. They will soon face sanctions. They will soon have skyrocketing unemployment. Groups are being armed. It has all the makings of a civil war.

Like I said, that can easily be the US of the future. Let's hope our checks and balances work better than theirs did.
