Venezuela had a similar issue, they were able to sell oil and fund many many socialist policies. When the oil prices dropped (and as FC said, their oil isn't exactly the best kind to begin with) the funding for those policies dried up. Where they differ from Greece is that their government isn't stable. People have lost faith in the government and the system. The government is desperately trying to hold onto power and has basically just established a dictatorship, or will officially when they rewrite the constitution. They're actively silencing opposition and rewarding loyal party members. They're reacting violently towards protesters and ignoring the people. They're corrupt. They have no international support. Their money is worthless. They will soon face sanctions. They will soon have skyrocketing unemployment. Groups are being armed. It has all the makings of a civil war.

Like I said, that can easily be the US of the future. Let's hope our checks and balances work better than theirs did.

As a system designer, I have come to regard Trump as just system stress testing. The system has proved resilient to any number of faults so far, and this one in particular is not new. The only thing different about it this time is the casualness of it, "Yeah, I'm fucking a goat. So what? Hillary fucks goats. How come you're not watching Hillary fuck goats?"

The demonstrable enduring resiliency of a social engineering experiment designed by a bunch of old white traitors who liked to get drunk and dress up in wigs and prance about in women's clothes during the experimental design phase is most impressive. I think it's because they were drunk and the unflattering women's clothing business was just coincidental but I can't rule out its influence. Same reason drunk drivers don't die in car accidents. Too oblivious to try and resist physics. They just roll with it.

Nope, I am all uni'ed out. In hindsight I shouldn't have gone when I did, I don't think anyone should go at such a young age actually. I think if I went now I would appreciate it more and properly apply myself. But I'm not going back, I know what I wanna do and that doesn't include/require spending another 3/4 years studying.

I don't regret going mind you, I know a lot of people who do regret going but I don't. I'm glad I did it, stops all the "what if". I think it was worth going for the life experience of going to university. Just yeah, it probably would have been better (in terms of success rate) if I went later.

Sucks to be them.

Yabut, that's not an end of the world problem. Look at Greece for example, yea they fucked up and didn't manage their finances and now they're broke as fuck. BUT their government is stable, their government is working to solve the issue and it will take a while but Greece will eventually recover.

I guess I didn't make my point clearly. I'll try again.

They did things in a typical third world fashion. They won the lottery (oil wise) and blew it on bullshit. The state subsidized the price of gasoline, to make the peons giddy with happiness - so yeah - gas was $.08 a gallon. Rah, rah....

The fuckup is they ignored the obvious - that at some point the price of gas would destabilize. ( or the oil simply runs out) and they made no investment in diversification. When the coffers were fat, they should have been offering business loans to create new jobs in new industries..... Anything - agriculture, tourism, manufacturing, mining, alternative energy......

But no... They toddled down one easy path, and followed it right to the end - off a cliff.......

The difference between prayer and masturbation - is when a guy is through masturbating - he has something to show for his efforts.

Oh, yea for sure. That's the issue with semi-communists. (I don't wanna say socialists because socialism can work when done right)

I think a good example to follow would be the UAE (and Qatar). They got insanely wealthy off oil and gas and took that money and invested it into things such as tourism. I mean Dubai was literally a desert until the UAE found oil, now it's a major city on the international stage with a good tourism industry. The oil dried up (well, the price of oil) but the UAE is still rich and surviving because, like you say other countries should have done, they invested for the future.

RE: Venezuela is so fucked.
So far this thread has forgotten one of the scarier things, in my opinion. That police helicopter that launched grenades at their Supreme Court the other month.

Need to think of a witty signature.

Oh yea forgot about that. The Supreme Court was trying to effectively seize power and the government weren't too keen on that idea (because it interferes with their attempts to seize power). If the government didn't do it directly (which I think they did), they certainly riled up their radical supporters to do it for them and are responsible either way.

Also, just yesterday, a bunch of opposition are now hiding in the Chillian embassy after two of their leaders were arrested the other night. They're trying to flee the country because Maduro has vowed to arrest all opposition members.

I think the only reason this might not result in civil war is that the general public/opposition doesn't have radical armed groups like the government does. (not that I know of anyway). I think that's the opposition's problem, they're being bullied into this by the government and there's pretty much fuck all they can do about it.

Basically, the whole countries fucked.

The Bolshies didn't have the support of many Russians at all. That's why there was a few years' war after their takeover. They seized the telegraphs and railroads while controlling Moscow, St Petersburg, and little else.

Huh.. I don't actually know much (very little actually) about the Russian Revolution. I always assumed it was the people rising up sick of aristocratic rule considering they were a monarchy prior to it. That's supposedly how communism is supposed to happen anyway, the mass poor rising up. Come to think of it China was the same. The Communist Chinese were a minority rebel force that would later come and take over all China (with the help of the USSR though mind you).
