We are 1 in 100,000,000,000
Just saw on the news that scientists have determined that there is likely one planet per star in our galaxy alone meaning there are 100,000,000,000 planets in the Milky Way. God must really love us to pick our dot for his kid.

RE: We are 1 in 100,000,000,000
Scientists also estimate there are 100,000,000,000 - 500,000,000,000 galaxies. If we assume our galaxy is a rather average galaxy that means there are about 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 planets in the universe.

That also means that even if the odds of life developing on a given planet are 1 in a quintillion, it would still happen on 10,000 planets.

You're assuming we're the only place Jesus visited.

Jesus himself allegedly said:

Quote:I have other sheep, which are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will hear My voice; and they will become one flock with one shepherd.
John 10:16.

In my Churchy days, I used to like to conjecture maybe this meant he was the savior of extra-terrestrials too! Smile

Haha, if we meet aliens who have an exact copy of the Christian religion, I'll convert!

Ben, that's a very interesting point. I might be inclined to join you if that happened. Smile

And he visited them all in one night in a sleigh pulled by eight tiny reindeer.

RE: We are 1 in 100,000,000,000
The Drake Equation is the well known calculation of how many communicating civilizations there are in this galaxie. There is an interactive version of it, with an explanation of the terms of the equation at :

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/space/drake-equation.html

You can plug in your own estimates. Even if you are a pessimist, you can multiply your result by 500 billion, (and wasn't that estimate recently "upped" by a large number last Spring when the Hubble looked at one small dark spot and found some huge number ? ). Life elsewhere is a virtual certainty.

Dammit. Just means that if and when we do find ET life it still won't kill religion. They'll just point to John 10:16 and say, "See, the bible says there is other life. It's all right there."

Ya..but,

Don'tcha think that extending the "salvation" paradigm to other galaxies and other star systems is going to be going just a step too far. I can just see their 'Bible"...

Andromeda Genesis 1:22 "And Adam and Eve were expelled from the garden on planet Exelon 4. They asked "Why Lord ?. And he replied..."Never mind. Somebody over in the Milky Way just did a boo boo, and the entire universe is now gonna pay. Now get out."

I don't think so. Tongue
