Well this is a new one
My mom today tried to argue with me about why gay marriage shouldn't be allowed, and surprisingly, it didn't involve religion. Unsurprisingly, it was a laughable one. Her argument was that if we let people marry the same gender then "the tax forms would be messed up because there wouldn't be a male to be the taxpayer and a female to be the spouse so they wouldn't be able to pay taxes" and that "if we let gay people get married we'll have to change all the forms to say 'spouse 1' and 'spouse 2' which is just ridiculous and too liberal."

I don't know whether to laugh or cry at the absurdity.

That's always the easiest.

All information in the above post is my own opinion and will not
necessarily be logically sound or conform to reality as we know it.

You have been warned. Tongue

Notice what it says? Spouse's name. No problem.

Well at least it's not a hateful reason...it's a silly reason, but not hateful.

This is already taken care of. The IRS will recognize legally married same-sex partners, regardless of their state of residence. I'm not saying there won't be snags, because it is after all a government agency, but when everything goes right it should make no difference what kind of couple is in the marriage. "Civil unions" are still not marriages, so no IRS-love there.

And, the male in a hetero couple doesn't have to be listed first anyway. A couple is a couple. If they're filing jointly, they are one taxpaying unit, regardless of whose name is where on the form. If there's only one income earner, they should be listed first, but even if that's messed up it'll be caught and corrected.

That's not the reason, it's the excuse. The reason is still hateful.

Yea - I'm kind of wondering why an taxpaying adult does not know this. When filing jointly, it has never required anything but "spouse's name" and there is no box to tic regarding gender of spouse.

Her argument was that the taxpayer is always make and the spouse is always female and if there were two males or two females there would be no way of deciding who would be the taxpayer and who would be the spouse. It's an incredibly flimsy argument at best. She's also one of those people that argues if we let people marry the same gender soon people will be wanting to marry goats or three year old children and that'll end up being legal.
