Went on my first Uber drive last Saturday. It was interesting.
So last Saturday I signed up to be an Uber driver and I had an interesting time. I was a little hesitant at first, I heard lots of horror stories about drunk passengers harassing drivers, especially troubling for female drivers. That scared me the most, especially because I'm trans female.

But the first day was OK. Most people didn't care for conversation. They uploaded their pickup location, uploaded their dropoff location, and played with their phones the entire trip. No money exchanged hands, the app took care of all payments and charges.

I drive nine trips, and refunded one because the map app took me really far in the wrong direction and I didn't want to overcharge my passenger.

Of the eight paid trips, I made about $83 and paid $20 for gas and a car wash. The car was was badly overdue, and I wanted to start with a full tank. For my first time driving, I don't think that was that bad of a haul. I've heard of others making a lot more, but they've been driving for a while.

Gypsy cabs with a fancy scheduling app.

No offense to the OP. Wink

My understanding is that you are not an employee of Uber but a subcontractor. That means you will have to personally handle Social Security taxes at like 13-14% and Medicaire/Medicaid taxes at like 6% or something and your Federal and State withholdings. You can deduct your expenses but I think if you're an Uber driver you are an independent contractor.
