RE: Were you once a believer?
I followed the pope once. I then read Dawkins' book. The man's a genius. I realized I believed in fairies and I made them vanish from my mind. Quite simple really. Now I'm here with you fine people! Cherrio!!

RE: Were you once a believer?
I was raised Catholic but didn't go to church a lot and didn't like prayer. But I once believed, and feared God was watching me when I did something or made a decision that maybe my parents or family wouldn't agree. For example, not going to church, not praying, and also I lived with my GF now current wife and got married out of fear of God not liking that I was living with her while not married. But now I'm getting over it little by little. Now my life is mine and nothing tells me how to live it.

RE: Were you once a believer?
Family forced catholic religion on me as child. I grew up got my own mind and beliefs - nothing will tell me how to live or what to do.

RE: Were you once a believer?
I received an excellent Jewish education at the Modern Orthodox synagogue to which my family belonged. Both my sisters are still believers, god help 'em.

Unlike most North American Jews of my generation (Boomer), I know exactly what it is I don't believe in. ;-)

RE: Were you once a believer?
Quite.

It leaves me less critical of other believers and more of the religions themselves. I remember that belief.

Ehh. I'm a critic of everything. It's innate with me.

How can I put it...

I see true believers as victims, as I was once victimized. In the right scenario, any one of them could realize their error and lose their faith.

... The errors of their ways...

Moses supposes
His toeses to be roses,
But Moses supposes
Erroneously.

For nobody's toeses
Are poesies of roses
As Moses supposes
His to be.
