Westboro Vs Anonymous
The Letter:
Quote:Open Letter to Westboro Baptist Church
AN OPEN LETTER FROM ANONYMOUS

February 16, 2011

TO THE CONGREGANTS OF WESTBORO BAPTIST CHURCH:

We, the collective super-consciousness known as ANONYMOUS - the Voice of Free Speech & the Advocate of the People - have long heard you issue your venomous statements of hatred, and we have witnessed your flagrant and absurd displays of inimitable bigotry and intolerant fanaticism. We have always regarded you and your ilk as an assembly of graceless sociopaths and maniacal chauvinists & religious zealots, however benign, who act out for the sake of attention & in the name of religion.
Being such aggressive proponents for the Freedom of Speech & Freedom of Information as we are, we have hitherto allowed you to continue preaching your benighted gospel of hatred and your theatrical exhibitions of, not only your fascist views, but your utter lack of Christ-like attributes. You have condemned the men and women who serve, fight, and perish in the armed forces of your nation; you have prayed for and celebrated the deaths of young children, who are without fault; you have stood outside the United States National Holocaust Museum, condemning the men, women, and children who, despite their innocence, were annihilated by a tyrannical embodiment of fascism and unsubstantiated repugnance. Rather than allowing the deceased some degree of peace and respect, you instead choose to torment, harass, and assault those who grieve.
Your demonstrations and your unrelenting cascade of disparaging slurs, unfounded judgments, and prejudicial innuendos, which apparently apply to every individual numbered amongst the race of Man - except for yourselves - has frequently crossed the line which separates Freedom of Speech from deliberately utilizing the same tactics and methods of intimidation and mental & emotional abuse that have been previously exploited and employed by tyrants and dictators, fascists and terrorist organizations throughout history.

ANONYMOUS cannot abide this behavior any longer. The time for us to be idle spectators in your inhumane treatment of fellow Man has reached its apex, and we shall now be moved to action. Thus, we give you a warning: Cease & desist your protest campaign in the year 2011, return to your homes in Kansas, & close your public Web sites.
Should you ignore this warning, you will meet with the vicious retaliatory arm of ANONYMOUS: We will target your public Websites, and the propaganda & detestable doctrine that you promote will be eradicated; the damage incurred will be irreversible, and neither your institution nor your congregation will ever be able to fully recover. It is in your best interest to comply now, while the option to do so is still being offered, because we will not relent until you cease the conduction & promotion of all your bigoted operations & doctrines.

The warning has been given. What happens from here shall be determined by you.

WE ARE ANONYMOUS.
WE ARE LEGION.
WE DO NOT FORGIVE.
WE DO NOT FORGET.
EXPECT US.

RE: Westboro Vs Anonymous
You know, years ago, I thought anon was a passing craze, something that dorks like me did for fun and entertainment. I always forget that there are so many out there that take things up a notch or two above the norm. I kinda hope anon comes through against douchebaggery this time.

Something something something Dark Side

RE: Westboro Vs Anonymous
Although I don't think that Westboros should have the right to disturb events like funerals, I don't really get why anonymous targets Westboro. It would be absurd to see freedom of speech and information activists bring down the websites of some assholy church.

Correct me when I'm wrong.
Accept me or go to hell.

Lightbulb Freedom of speech yes! Proximity is the issue.
Anon. doesn't bring credibility to protesting the inbred Phelp's hatemonger clan. Rather they remind me of PeTa and that pet murdering legislatively impotent tax exempt group's agenda, which is to go radical and get press! Rather than being truly effective where it counts.

Maybe WestB. is going to die on it's own, given the legitimate opposition posed against them already. (Anyone heard of the USSC decision regarding the case brought against them for protesting proximity to soldiers funerals?)

WBC protesters didn't show up for play in Hastings
Westboro Baptist Church planned Sunday afternoon to protest the showing of the school's winter play, "The Laramie Project," but never showed up. The play is a collection of interviews conducted in Laramie, Wyo., where Matthew Shepard was beaten and left to die. The incident attracted national media attention, and was characterized as a hate crime against Shepard, who was a homosexual. So, where were the protesters? RE: Westboro Vs Anonymous
I think it's good that someone is standing against WBC. Free speech is one thing but yelling fire in a crowded theater is another. They can protest , but nobody out there is enough of a dick to do it at funerals and when people are at their lowest.I believe US veterans formed a biker club to keep these people away.

I hope anon. wipes them off cyberspace.

RE: Westboro Vs Anonymous
The primary purpose of this "church" is to get media attention. They don't show up to half the venues they threaten to attend (probably because they can't afford it), but they get press all the same. If people stop paying attention to them they will eventually just go away.

It would not surprise me at all if the "church" was behind the anonymous threat.

I don't know exactly how I feel about Anon doing this. I'm a big proponent of free speech and that includes speech I don't agree with. We'll see.

RE: Westboro Vs Anonymous
-When free speech crosses the line into something that becomes destructive, is it still worth protecting?
-What about the problems and emotional damaged caused by idiots like the WBC?
-Should people be allowed to say anything they want to, no matter how damaging or hurtful?
-Would it not be better to have a line that once crossed makes people accountable.
-Maybe we should all be accountable for everything we say.
-Shouldn't free speech come WITH responsibility?
-Does free speech mean that it is OK to create any lie you want and pass it off as truth?

I do believe in free speech, but I also believe in responsibility. Free speech without responsibility can be just as destructive as squashing free speech. There needs to be a realistic middle ground.

When I find myself in times of trouble, Richard Dawkins comes to me, speaking words of reason, now I see, now I see.

RE: Westboro Vs Anonymous
I'm kind of with No J on this. The only thing I'd say differently is I'd change "responsibility" with "accountability". Maybe I'm just mincing words though.
Westborough isn't just practicing free speech, they are hurting people. Hurting people in a very real way as far as I'm concerned. I think they should be held accountable for that. If I stand on a streetcorner, and talk about how using methamphetamine is good for you, while gradeschool kids are being let out of school, and some of them try meth as a result of what I say, I should be held accountable. It's my "right" to share my opinion publicly, but I still deserve a serious ass-kicking for doing it.

Just visiting.
