Louis Jordan. One of the greatest rock n roll artists. Known as The King of the jukebox. Great song, Saturday night fish fry.

Nfithe from Mozambique.

Kodo drummers of Japan. I'd just been asked to join a taiko group before I fell ill.

The one and only Tom Zé.

Mabulu from Mozambique.

Not sure if this is your cup of tea, but it qualifies as terrific percussion.

RE: What Are You Listening To?
Carlinhos Brown produced a Sepulchura album.

I have heard all this stuff. I used to work in music 24/7 all year round. I taught this style. There's nothing more really for me to learn from rock and pop. So I went to the ethnic styles. But I still enjoy it. For example I like the drum groove on this song.

But for a drummer percussionist the excitement is in jazz, Cuban, Afro, Brasilian, Morrocon etc. As Bill Bruford said, once a drummer has developed technique and experienced interesting rhythmic forms, there is no going back. Smile

Listening to the last Soulfly track (I know them) and the conga part is a cha cha cha straight out of an EDIT As I typed it clicked off. This conga part is based in a mambo but the percussionist is messing with it. It's beautiful.
I have to know ALL this stuff. I like metal, thrash, prog etc etc. I am a professional musician and have to be able to play it. And teach it! Smile

Here is a student I taught playing a prog tune you may enjoy. This student is only 13. This is what I did before the cancer.
