RE: What Are You Listening To?
Thanks for the Rap debate! Got me thinking of some of the first stuff I ever heard by the Sugar Hill Gang, Grand Master Flash, 2 Live Crew, B-boys. Rap is not cRap! Michael Connelly espoused an excellent dissertation on Rap music in the novel 'The Lincoln Lawyer'. Good read if it's on the web somewhere.

Rap music didn't seem to be so segregated when I was growing up. Good example here:

Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy

True, a lot of what is out today is Pop-Rap and is far from Hip-Hop. That's mainly just the mainstream though, and I even see that starting to change as of late. A lot of artists have been doing it right since the 90s and are still in the game putting out decent work, and there are even younger guys who are good; you just won't see those guys on MTV and BET.

I wouldn't hate on Kanye or 50 too much; they do deserve some hate though. Kanye makes a lot of pop bullshit, and 50 made some bullshit, but 50 had some stuff that I liked (prefer it more so than I think it's good), and Kanye was dope, especially with the beats. Kanye worked a lot with Common, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, who are some of the best lyricists in Hip-Hop; that's before and after signing with Jay-Z and him blowing up. No ID, the guy who produced Common's Resurrection, was actually one of Kanye's big influences. 50, also works with and respects a lot of the OGs in the game, who stay true to the culture of Hip-Hop. So, even though they do some things that are Pop and act crazy, they are okay, imo. They get too much hate from the elitists of Hip-Hop.

Good to You- Talib Kweli (prod. by Kanye)

They Say- Common ft. John Legend/Kanye West (prod. Kanye)

50 Cent is really only dope if you like more street stuff.

C.R.E.A.M. Freestyle- G-Unit

Life's on the Line- 50 Cent

Yeah, you can say some bad stuff about 50, but I liked 50 back in the day.

This is where I came in.

Just the trailer... it can be seen in it's entirety on YouTube.
I saw Style Wars in 1983 when it first appeared on PBS. To this twenty-something, Kansan, it was proof that the world was indeed, a marvelous imagination to wholeheartedly dive into. For many, this cursorily included the first documentations of Rap and Hip-Hop.

How can you not love a song about desire, lust, and sex?
