The proper way to cook a thick hunk of USDA prime sirloin. It's a roast not a fucking hamburger is what I got from that. Roasted up nicely. Big Grin

#sigh

There is a USA-started shaving group providing razors at about $6 per month - in place of Gillette rip-off ... anyone know anything about it? Apparently something similar in UK.

RE: What Did You Learn Today?
Not so much learnt, as was proved even righter about frogs being rather on the cool part.

"The red-eyed tree frog (Agalychnis callidryas) lives all over Central America and the Caribbean. In the day, when the frog is asleep, a gold membrane creeps over its eyes. It lets in a small amount of light, enough so that if a predator approaches, the non-poisonous frog can wake up, show its bulging red eyes and present its yellow feet in a bid to make the would-be attacker think twice."

Of course, life as a female red-eyed frog doesn't sound nearly as much fun: "When rainfall is at its highest, a male red-eyed tree frog calls "chack" to get the attention of the female, which then carries him on her back around for up to several hours during the oviposition process."

I get it that it's hard to say 'no' when you're being chacked at but a line must be drawn somewhere... Rolleyes

I learnt from my Indian restaurant chef that "Rogan Josh" means "oil, exciting"
Not red lamb as I had been told years ago.
After I asked why beef rogan josh was on the menu.

Theism is to believe what other people claim, Atheism is to ask "why should I".

That scientists are a weird, even cruel bunch. When they're not heating soap bubbles, they're blindfolding beetles and pinning plungers tails on chickens. Supposedly, to make them walk like Egyptians dinosaurs.

(And I know I should have put this into the elegant nature of science thread... but there ain't nothing elegant about poor little critters bumping into things. And chickens having sticks up their cloacae!)

(For some reason this really made me laugh. Blush "Speed is blinding. Though predatory tiger beetles have excellent sight, when they chase prey, they run so fast they can no longer see where they are going."

And speaking of galloping beetles, this is old news (to me), but still hella cute and interesting. Smile

Mach bands: "an optical illusion which exaggerates the contrast between edges of the slightly differing shades of gray, as soon as they get in contact with each other. Although each stripe has a uniform brightness all the way across, it appears darker on the side that touches a lighter stripe. On the other side, where it is contrasted with a line that looks darker, it looks relatively bright. "

(Probably explains why some prefer to surround themselves with people they consider inferior in one way or another - looks, brains, success. Doesn't make it any less pathetic (or pointless), though.)

RE: What Did You Learn Today?
knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit

wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad

philosophy is wondering if that means ketchup is a smoothie

common sense is knowing that ketchup isn’t a damn smoothie ya nasty

I learned Shirley Temple died.

I also learned that if you add vodka to her drink it's called a Diry Shirley.

But as if to knock me down, reality came around
And without so much as a mere touch, cut me into little pieces

She's trending on tumblr. I used to watch her show when I was little. Sad
