I had a short lived career in TV and Comic Books. Definitely something I much rather be doing. I'm the happiest when I get to draw and have people enjoy my work. My friends in the industry are constantly pushing me to get back into it.

But I afraid of falling into bankruptcy. I make a fair wage here at the casino and it put's a roof over my head and food on my table. A career in art is a constant job. Constantly promoting yourself, constantly doing art pieces to make money that usually goes back into the art. I've never been as good at anything as I am with my illustrations. But i'm my own worst critic. And put myself down constantly as never thinking I'm good enough to get recognized.

Have you tried doing a webcomic?

Why? I was going to post earlier about the theatrical and costuming you mentioned. Theatre and entertainment is important and can really make a difference in a person's life.

BTW, have you ever done work for cosplayers? or do you focus on the theatre?

RE: What Do You Do/Did For A Living?
I have been all over the place when it comes to jobs. I started as a teen working at a supermarket pushing carts and bagging. After that I worked as a cashier, still one of the shittiest jobs ever. From there I went to testing and troubleshooting power supplies at a power supply manufacturer. After that I worked at an arcade until it closed down. Next it was off to an unarmed security job at a corporate center, where there were no raises ever and no benefits. Then 2 more security jobs, one at a condo complex and the other at a supermarket. That job had its' fun moments and while there were raises for me, there were still no benefits to be had. I now have a job selling trailers and this is turning into a career.

Then after kids and a huge move, I stopped working. Once I was more or less ok with the idea of returning to work, my younger son was Dx'd with autism -- so dealing with his issues kinda screwed me.

Your job and the other forum members who are parents of autistic children have the hardest jobs going. My hats off to you all. You're all amazing.

I understand. I essentially work for people who specialize in debt collection. While I realize that is probably one of the most hated professions, I also think it is wrong to accrue debt and not pay it as agreed.

I prefer fantasy, but I have to live in reality.

So for the most part I show kids letters and words (or, alternatively, read them stories, depending on what their specific challenges are) and have them image them, ramping up the difficulty over time until they can read fluently at or above grade level. I've been there for about a year and it's really rewarding most of the time (although I have been kicked/hit/headbutted on occasion). It's given me a real insight into the world of learning disabilities and other special needs. So many of the kids I've worked with have so much potential, but have been beaten down by years of inability to find an environment in which their specific needs can be met. When that is provided for them they are able to succeed in amazing ways.

Hoping to move away from hourly work eventually and get my Masters. The dream is a professorship although I know that's certainly a long shot. For now I'm just grateful to be out of food service...it's kind of incredible how rude people can be when they're at a restaurant. Hopefully I won't have to go back to that anytime soon, but at least I'm prepared for it now.

Wow. I now feel like a worthless toad.

Please don't. There's no reason for that. You're an awesome person from what I know of you Smile

I've been putting some together. A friend of mine wants me to post them so bad. Every time we talk he's always pushing me to put it on his web-sight.

I haven't finished anything (out side of sketch faze) in years.

My friend finished this one on me behind my back to get me more motivated.

RE: What Do You Do/Did For A Living?
Currently, an Assistant Professor at a public university. Previously, I've been all over. Graduate Assistant, Teaching Assistant, Research Assistant, Telemarketer, McDonalds employee (my favorite non-academic job; 4 years of undergrad and learned a lot there), worked the liquidation of Circuit City and a few months before, employee of a certain litigious company with Blue Light Specials where I was threatened with bodily harm by both employees and customers. I've also done some unpaid stuff: Volunteered for Habitat for Humanity, co-directed a Vacation Bible School, volunteered in a prison ministry, volunteered with a domestic violence shelter, and served as a webmaster for a United States Senate campaign (my candidate lost hardcore and I was happy about that...).

Need to think of a witty signature.
