You obviously missed this part... "The residents weren't physically injured".

And of course the possibility of being beaten up would bother me, but as my example shows, it's not inevitable. And certainly not worth me killing a 14-year-old kid. I also note that—unlike this probability in the US—none of the kids was carrying a firearm.

So I'm thinking, what the fuck is a "vigilante rap". So I google "What the fuck does a 'vigilante rap' mean in England?" and I get this -

For example when I found myself in court on a vigilante rap 5 years ago for taking on a black drug gang single-handed, a BNP guy attended most of my court appearances to lend moral support in the face of the cowardly corrupt police who brought the prosecution.. (In short, I tipped off Leicester police for many months about the blatant drug dealing I witnessed at a nearby house but they did nothing. Then the dealers (who were black) complained to the police that I was "racially harassing them" by watching them with my binoculars, so the police swung smoothly into action and I was sentenced to 3 months jail).

Is that what you mean by a "vigilante rap"?

#sigh

The entire world over, 14 year old kids beat people to death with whatever they have. It is not inevitable, but armed with the tools to do so and in a gang, the likelihood is quite high that someone will be injured. When you get whacked in the head with a bat, your survival is just luck.
The idea that this hypothetical 14 year old who is hypothetically shot to death is somehow not a violent crimindal is ludicrous.
I am not supporting the notion of a gun in every home, but I think your example is rediculous. It would be a completely legitimate use of force to defend yourself in that situation with a gun or your own bat or a 9 section whip, or a broadsword.

Death for robbery seems a bit harsh mate.

"You need my wallet so badly you break into my house? Do you want pie with that?"

No possession is worth a kid's life mate.

It's so bizarre.

I don't need a broadsword or 9 section whip by my fridge, in case of an intruder.

America. Blink

I don't get it.

I trained with a retired Marine through my high school years, then the Navy helped me refine that training. I don't need a gun. I really like edged weapons, however.

Just to clarify your stance... you're apparently saying that if a 14-year-old kid approaches you with violent intent, and armed with a baseball bat, it's perfectly okay—morally and ethically—to shoot him to death?

And that sort of potential violence makes it acceptable to have a loaded gun at the ready—even in your own home?

I guess if the kid was brandishing a firearm of some sort, and you feared being shot yourself, you might use a gun in self-defence, but here in Australia I doubt that you'd find any 14-year-olds with ready access to a firearm, knives being the usual weapon of choice. Or fence pickets.
