Only paid $400.

Shit...     Downunder, you just can't buy any roadworthy vehicle, of any make, for that kinda money.

EG: A 1993 Mazda 626 (for example) with 125,000 miles on its clock will put you back around $1,800 here.

Why are these things so expensive down (under) there anyway?

What about title and registration? It varies greatly in the US by state.

In the state of Victoria, typical costs paid by purchaser:

• Annual registration = $800.80 (if expired)
• Buyer transfer fee = $39.10
• State government duty = $75.60
• Included GST = $163.33 (Federal goods & service tax)
• TAC insurance = $180.00 (compulsory 3rd-party accident insurance)
• Roadworthy certificate = $80.00 (plus necessary repair/replacement part costs)

TOTAL = $1339.00 (approx)

Ouch!

Federal government import duties (up to 33%), goods and services tax (VAT), State government taxes, low vehicle import volumes, no local car industry, excessive dealer markups, badge vanity etc.

A new Toyota Hilux pickup would cost approx $48K in Australia, but only approx $29K for the equivalent Toyota Tacoma in the US.  Or a Porsche 911 Cabriolet for a cool $296K v. only $117K in South Africa... or a Mercedes Benz E class for $99K v. only $73K in the UK. (all in AUD as of February 2016)

(The picture is small, so for reference the tires are 38 inches)
