RE: What are gods?
So far I'm in the minority as answering, allegorical icons of ideological systems.

God's don't exist, they're just imaginary friends for those who need them to, so as to cope with a real life in a real world.

Works for me, as well. I just don't appreciate being required to think it.

When I was a pagan, I thought something similar, but then it also involved somehow powering up the hypothetical software behind the icon through ritual, so that when you clicked it something "real" happened. Daft, I know. I must have been impressed by the fact that most of the pagans I knew in Seattle seemed to work for Microsoft.

RE: What are gods?
Gods, to me, are what I imagine to be what most theists define them as: supernatural and superhuman entities (usually anthropomorphic; should I dare to say usually human in appearance?) with some degree of control over destiny and/or the natural world (including its manufacture). I have a definition for faeries outside of just ideology based on the unknown, too. Tongue It's very easy to define things that don't exist, BECAUSE they exist in ideology, which I'm sure most of us would agree is separate and distinct from what we normally claim to be "existent".

My vote would have to be on all three options.

"It does feel like something to be wrong; it feels like being right." -Kathryn Schulz
I am 100% certain that I am wrong about something I am certain about right now. Because even if everything I stand for turns out to be completely true, I was still wrong about being wrong.
