1, because of this stupid mac. Tongue

Played for a coupla hours; have little idea WTF I'm doing. Surf for guides time. Big Grin

Hey now; don't go indirectly disparaging RTW now.

Probably my favourite game at the moment for a reason; it's fun...
Most of the time...

If you like fun, stick to the Roman factions. Carthage, Greece and the Seleucid empire are good for challenging games. And barbarian factions are good for inevitable loss!

No disparagement involved; other than "player error," 'cause the player's an idiot. Big Grin

I'm gonna start over; if it keeps me amused, I'll probably buy the second one later. I got the Rome version 'cause I love Roman stuff. The second one looks all pretty and stuff but I'll hafta play in the front room on the PC.

Just for future reference.

Total War games in order of awesomeness as told by Muffs (thus correct).

1. Shogun 2: Total War
2. Empire: Total War
3. Rome: Total War
4. Medieval 2: Total War
5. Napoleon: Total War
6. Rome 2: Total War
7. Medieval: Total War
8. Shogun: Total War

They really did go backwards with R2TW. If it was like Shogun2 (balanced with improved graphics and some gameplay mechanic improvements) but just Rome setting I think it would be the best TW ever, possibly even the best strategy game ever made if not the best video game in general ever made. But they fucked the dog on it and stuffed it up. Though it's still fun and by no means a bad game.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and number 2 are $3.59NZ (about $2.75US?) on Steam at the moment each.

Some of the best RPG's of all time. Just sayin'

I haven't played Shogun, Medieval or Rome 2 yet... But, keeping that in mind, I have to ask: How the fuck is Napoleon not at the bottom of the list?

How bad must those below be?!

I'm probably pretty bias. Napoleon is like my favorite person in history so...
It probably should be below Rome 2 but I'm pretty sour at R2TW for going backwards after such a great game like Shogun 2.
Medieval 1 and Shogun 1 are early early games. They're more like a game of risk than what you'd know as a TW game. There are provinces and you move armies from one province to another rather than along a path on a map. Their earliness is also against them. Medieval 2 TW was a HUGE improvement. Like going from Fallout 1/2 to Fallout 3.

Fair enough, I'm a sucker for the Roman shit too. (still waiting on Rome Universals 2, the Roman version of Europa Universals (a grand strategy game I play and go on and on about because it's so awesome) . They might make it after they done Hearts of Iron 4 though if they make RU2 than I'll have to wait even longer for Victoria 3.. the struggle is real #firstworldproblems).

...and these little creeps. Botanicula for the iPad. I got a few of these atmospheric adventure games for when midnight rolls around and I can't quite summon the Zs.

At least you admit it...
Of the small sample size I have for Total War games, Napoleon was easily the weakest; it had some cool ideas, but they always felt poorly implemented and annoying.

And while I know nobody cares, I'mma say it anyway; I managed to drag myself out of the hole I was in in RTW in my Carthaginian game.

After fending off several more sieges on Sicily, I repelled one final Scipii invasion and am suddenly greeted with the news that the Scipii no longer exist. Out of nowhere.

After sending an army to follow through with "Operation Italian Greed", I found that their one city (Capua) was overrun with rebels. I immediately sacked the city and left if for the rebels again, then did the same to the Brutii home cities and after beinf force away with my tail between my legs, I returned to play with the Julii and after two towns and slow grind down of my forces, promptly got massacred. The remnants of that force have been built up over the followed decade and are now being sent to plunder the fuck out of Greece (Henceforth known as "Operation Greek Modernity").
Additionally, I dealt with the Numidians as well and have a secure hold over west Africa.
Not everything is peachy however; the Spanish are picking up their attacks on Corduba, along with the Julii... right now there is a full stack of double-gold chevron peasants and barbarian mercs laying siege to it... Thus far, I have nothing I can do to them...
Plus apparently the Brutii have gotten bored of, well I don't even know if anybody still exists to fight them, the Great Demon Egypt exempt, of course, so they have decided to come pick on me too.

I get the feeling, I'm not going to get another out-of-nowhere faction-wipe to save me this time.

RE: What are you playing?
I'm at the way beginning - turn 10 or so - playing the Julii. Of course. 'Cause there ain't no Brutii nor Scipii - there ware Junii and Cornelii - and there was like 18 praenomina in use back then, and Flavius wasn't one of 'em! Big Grin

Distraction - yes, it would have been better if the player could name his own peeps. Anyhoo... I've been victorious over two hoards of peasants, and my dude "Flavius" Julius (le sigh) has five stars already! Of course, I've read so many guides, if I don't romp-em stomp-em in this adventure Imma hafta fall on my sword in shame.

LATER

Oh, and I'm totally not on steam on the other computer looking at Rome II vids - cause that would lead to fiscal irresponsibility. And I'm certainly not that. Angel
