What do conservatives fear?
Hi,

What is it that conservatives fear? They talk a tough game at all times and in all parts of the world, but there is something that they fear, viscerally, and on an existential level. What is it?

The Belgian writer, Lauryssens, writes of a proto – fascist in pre ww11 Germany:

“For Moeller van den Bruck there is no doubt that again the arch enemy of German culture is liberalism, which stands for everything that is corrupt.”

The last line of the above could have been written by an American Christian Republican in the year 2017. “..liberalism, which stands for everything that is corrupt.” The line is universal - “everything” and finally judgemental - “corrupt”. For those that hold to this belief, the words 'crooked Hillary' would likely have been a lighting rod to what they already know is true, and the sight of Obama's polished shoes on the president's desk in the oval office? I'll leave that to the imagination.

Of course there is a religious ontology to this thinking for the American Christian Republicans: the “fall” of man. Again, for those who believe this story, there is no reasoning to be done, for the world is fallen and can never be put right by liberal, and as they believe, tainted secular tinkering with God's plan. Such dangerously wrong ideas and practices lead straight to the horrors of socialism, communism and the demon. For them, it is a done deal.

I'll confess that there is little comfort in the above analysis, but sometimes it is reassuring to look into the distorting mirror of the other's mind and see it as it is. Fearful.

D.

Better question is what conservatives don't fear.

The first revolt is against the supreme tyranny of theology, of the phantom of God. As long as we have a master in heaven, we will be slaves on earth.

RE: What do conservatives fear?

"The followers must feel humiliated by the ostentatious wealth and force of their enemies. When I was a boy I was taught to think of Englishmen as the five-meal people. They ate more frequently than the poor but sober Italians. Jews are rich and help each other through a secret web of mutual assistance. However, the followers must be convinced that they can overwhelm the enemies. Thus, by a continuous shifting of rhetorical focus, the enemies are at the same time too strong and too weak."

"At the root of the Ur-Fascist psychology there is the obsession with a plot, possibly an international one. The followers must feel besieged. The easiest way to solve the plot is the appeal to xenophobia. But the plot must also come from the inside: Jews are usually the best target because they have the advantage of being at the same time inside and outside. In the US, a prominent instance of the plot obsession is to be found in Pat Robertson's The New World Order, but, as we have recently seen, there are many others."

Umberto Eco, Ur-Fascism (1995)

RE: What do conservatives fear?
Which conservatives?

All of them?

Painting with a broad brush is painting with a broad brush.

.......

I know some people I consider pretty conservative to be claustrophobic. I know one who's afraid of snakes. Several others who I consider conservative are afraid of heights. Of course I know a few "progressives" who are equally afraid of the same things. (although I don't know one personally who has the snake phobia).

.....

So whats the point of the question?????

I think that terminology is important here.

I am conservative (small 'c') when it comes to for example, written communication. Yet I am liberal (small 'l') when it comes to spoken language.

I understand that the latter is more open to evolutionary forces like natural selection and it's even desirable because it enables diversity of colour and flourishing.

The former however is a method of establishing order.

Can we use a shorthand to describe Conservatives (big 'c') as those who favour order and the status quo? Yes.

Therefore the answer to the question is that Conservatives fear change and chaos.

The problem is that what is currently thought of as Conservative in the political sense is not that. These are people who reject a form of 'bigly government' that seeks to impose a type of order that makes them feel uncomfortable. In fact, they seem to be happiest when they are imposing freedom (deregulation) yet also imposing out-dated moral systems (10 commandments and shit).

So it might be better to find a term that encompasses those who are socially conservative (even regressive on e.g. abortion) but economically Darwinian to the point of being Authoritarian Libertarians.

In business, the liberal mind (open, innovative) is needed as much as the conservative mind (risk-averse, conscientious) for the organisation to remain stable but also explore new territory.

Societies need both.

In essence, I think the answer relates to order vs. chaos. This current breed of 'conservatives' seek order and fear chaos but this cannot be divorced from the outcomes they want to achieve. Chaos in other countries is not their problem, chaos in the markets brings them wealth.

They want order in their own communities and the rest of the peasants can go fuck themselves.

Or something like that.

RE: What do conservatives fear?
Conservatives fear (or resent) the loss of power and privilege--of which they still have a lot, but not quite as much as 50 or 100 or 200 years ago. I understand this; it's useful to have power, and it's nice to exist in a privileged bubble because of the color of your skin and abundant resources collected by your ancestors. Wasn't it...great...when if you were a white male with a high school education, you could have a decent paying job and a little house and a wife whose job was to pop out kids and take care of that house, when you could work for one employer your whole career? Wasn't it...great...when you were white and upper class and your kinda dumb kid wanted the prestige and connections of an Ivy League degree and you didn't have to worry about whether Yale or UPenn would give your kid's slot to some smart brown kid?

Of course at bottom most of us tend to feel that we've earned all of our power and that any privilege that favors us isn't a big deal or is the result of our moral superiority. So we paint groups that threaten it as unworthy, envious, and malign. So liberals = corrupt.

I haven't had breakfast yet, so maybe that's why a pie analogy springs to mind to describe my take on the US political outlook: liberals pay at least lip service to the idea of cutting the pie into more slices; conservatives think they can make a bigger pie, but sliced the same as it's been in the past.

RE: What do conservatives fear?
Fear has nothing and everything to do with conservatism and liberalism.

Fear is something humanity has always lived with. Fear of predators, fear of intruders, fear of the elements, fear of your elders, fear of the unknown and and......

When we have peaceful and prosperous times, we seek fear in other ways. Scary movies and games were the latest things all people can access.

Fear used to be needed to save the species from being obliterated, only a fool is always brave. We don't really need it now in many parts of the world, but it's innate and there we go, over and over again...

What do conservatives fear?
Politically speaking. Fear of more government. In turn this means more taxes, less personal choice, less freedoms, more government encroachment. Why would one want more government? I know many federal employees with many departments. The common consensus is their departments are very poorly organized. You can't get anything accomplished. There is a huge, I mean gross amount of money wasted. Why would I ever vote for a party, that has a primary agenda to input more of its beliefs down my throat. I'm conservative all the way.

I will believe the small government argument when conservatives stop spending millions trying to pass laws that govern people's bedrooms and personal lives.
