Question What do you mean by "Atheist"?
So... I argue on YouTube a lot. <Waits for snickering to stop.>
I've said several times that "most atheists use the word atheist in a particular way"... but it occurs to me that I really don't have anything backing that. Sooo... what do you mean when you refer to yourself as an atheist?

1) Atheist: Someone who says gods do not exist.
2) Atheist: Someone who says no gods exist.
3) Atheist: Someone who does not accept that any gods exist.
4) Atheist: Someone who does not accept that any gods exist due to lack of evidence.
5) 1 and/or 2
6) 3 and/or 4

Laughat The snickering is never gonna stop.

7) Some random comes up to me and starts flapping their gums about religion, and I go, "Imma atheist," which is pretty much the end of it.

My personal "official" definition of atheist is "one who rejects contemporary theology."

I do not believe in god or gods. There is no evidence for the supernatural, nor does there need to be. Hard stop....

4. And it's not only lack of evidence - or coherent and falsifiable definition - but the science has sound theories about universe with good explanatory powers.

To quote words ascribed to Laplace: I had no need of that hypothesis.

The first revolt is against the supreme tyranny of theology, of the phantom of God. As long as we have a master in heaven, we will be slaves on earth.

Eh,

4 is the best. Most won't even tell what they mean by the word "God" and those who do won't give any reason to buy into the idea. Those reasons that are given are often flimsy.

RE: What do you mean by "Atheist"?
Don't think it's possible to know that answer, since "supernatural" is by definition outside the realm of scientific proof or testable evidence (agnostic), and think that every version of which I've been made aware is clear, obvious, man-made hogwash (atheist).

So, I suppose #6.

How about: "takes no position on the existence of gods or the supernatural but lives life as if they do not exist and seeks to understand the natural universe"

RE: What do you mean by "Atheist"?
I don't see a difference between #1 and #2 and the only difference between #3 and #4 is the specific reason for the lack of belief. #4 is the best available choice for me personally but I voted #3 because when I use the word atheist I just mean somebody who does not accept any claim that a god exists. They may not accept some claims for reasons other than lack of evidence and I may even find their reasons for rejecting claims to be irrational but if they reject all god claims then they are atheists.
