Fuck-all, essentially.

Christians I have knew largely bonded to present a facade of arrogant self-righteousness and a near universal lack of self-introspection. Oh, that and they're scared of death.

Excommunication is just shunning through the withholding of social reciprocity and acceptance. No church can stop you from identifying with its beliefs, but they can shun you for not following them correctly.

The nice thing about Christianity, or at least Protestant Christianity, is that there is a denomination / sect somewhere who will have you -- if in fact you care about that. But you might not care. What beliefs you personally accept and what club of fellow members you choose to conform to (or more generically, who if anyone you choose to be accountable to), are entirely separate questions.
